Expert Tips for Self-Isolating Dogs and Owners

Whilst the ongoing pandemic has undoubtedly taken its toll on us humans, we mustn’t forget about our little (and often not-so-little) furry friends.

The Best Dog Walks in London

In light of the government’s response to stay at home, most of us dog-owners are spending a lot more time with our pups. Meanwhile, The Times reported a record surge in animal adoptions, with many looking to welcome a special ‘lockdown companion’ to their home in view of the virus.

Forthglade

Yet, this doesn’t come as too much of a surprise. Self-isolation and spending more time at home might just be the perfect time to welcome a new dog into the family, whilst the positive impact of animals on our wellbeing means dogs are an ideal companion during these unprecedented times, ensuring a certain level of structure, comfort and joy.

In fact, Devonshire-based natural dog nutrition specialist Forthglade reveals that 57 percent of owners cite their canine companion as a best friend, with 60 percent stating that their dog helps them cope with stress and anxiety.

Yet amongst all this puppy love, social distancing and outdoor restrictions has meant that many pups aren’t able to enjoy as much time outside as they might typically be used to.

Animal Behaviourist and co-founder of ‘Mindful Living and Our Dogs’, Caroline Wilkinson explains ‘we’re all adjusting to a very new world right now. Yes, even your dog is adjusting. They’re adjusting to their humans suddenly being more accessible and present in the home.’ Now’s the time to enhance your pup-owner relationship.

Forthglade

‘Don’t overlook the value of a routine’, she says. ‘Routines can offer a sense of security, particularly to anxious dogs. Aim to include any cornerstones of your usual routines that you can – being predictable when it comes to mealtimes, exercise, and bedtimes. While exercise time is restricted, think creatively when it comes to any mental enrichment you can also offer your dog. It’s so important we consider our dogs’ welfare – and our own sanity! – during the coming months.’

Caroline’s Top Tips for Keeping your Dog Happy at Home

Enjoy outside time when you can

Sunlight can help with the production of serotonin – a feel-good hormone – for us and our dogs! As we’re staying indoors for the majority of the day, really make the most of your outside environment if possible.  Use your walks and garden space as a time to take your eyes off your phone and enjoy an adventure with your dog.

Focus on the basics

This is a great time to work on low-distraction behaviours with your dog. Things like ‘response to name’, recall from room-to-room in your home, or just games of tuggy, will all build up the value you hold in your dog’s eyes.

Alone time

While we’re lucky to get extra time with our dogs at the moment, we don’t want to end up with hyper-attachment issues once normality resumes. Make sure you spend a little time away from your dog each day – whether that’s giving them a solo activity to do in the garden (such as food scatters) or leaving them in the lounge for a snooze while you are in another room. If your dog seems to be getting more needy or they’re concerned about being left alone even for a few minutes, seek advice of a force-free behaviourist over the phone or online.

Forthglade

Use noise

This is a great time to be working on slow, steady exposure to different sounds our dogs might usually be a little uncomfortable with hearing. Download some sounds, such as fireworks, traffic, thunder, or airplanes. Start off with these noises played at really low volumes in your home while your dog is doing something super fun – like playing with you. Over the coming weeks, slowly build up the volume of the sound. If your dog acts fearful at any point, again seek out the help of a force-free behaviourist.

Fun Feeding

One way we can easily add some extra entertainment into our dog’s day is by changing how we feed them. Instead of putting all your dog’s food into their bowl, allow them to eat half from their bowl and then give them a way to earn the rest. This could be through food scatters in the garden, putting their food into a slow feeder or mat, or asking them to do some simple behaviours to earn it. Earned food is often better than free food!

Use your dog’s nose

Our dog’s noses are incredible tools and by using them to find food, scented items, or their favourite people or toys, we can raise the happy hormones in our dog’s brains. Try wrapping some tasty treats up in a towel for your dog to unravel. Or, have three containers and hide a treat under one, shuffle their positions and then ask your dog to find the treat-hiding container. Play hide and seek in your house – when your dog finds you, give them a game of tuggy or a treat as a reward.

The power of touch

As long as your dog is comfortable with being touched, stroking them or having cuddles can be mutually beneficial for both dog and owner. If you’re not sure if your dog does enjoy being stroked, try stroking them for three seconds and then move your hand away. If they move back in towards you for more, you know they were enjoying it. Touch creates another great feel-good hormone – oxytocin, which is the love and bonding hormone. While we’re socially distancing and unable to hug our human friends, hug it out with your dog.

Dr Carri Westgarth’s Top Tips for Maintaining a Happy and Healthy Pup

Dr Carri Westgarth, a senior lecturer in Human-Animal Interaction at the University of Liverpool, emphasises the impact of our dog’s happiness on our own health. ‘Spending time with our dog, and watching them having fun, is a vicarious pleasure for owners – it makes us happier!’, she says. ‘Daily allowed exercise and indoor playtime isn’t just for our dogs’ mental and physical health, it’s for our own wellbeing too.’

  1. If your dog isn’t used to relaxing on its own when you are around, anticipate the problem and give them something to do instead, like licking food out of an activity toy or a safe chew.
  2. Try to ignore your dog if they are pestering – any response (even negative or pushing them away) is a reward as you have given them your attention, even if you just look at them.
  3. Teach your dog that chilling out is rewarded by telling them that they are good and giving them attention when they are lying nicely in their bed, so that they do this more often.
  4. Create a visual signal which means you will not give them any attention whilst that can be seen – this helps with times that you may be working at home or speaking on the phone. Introduce a piece of fabric over a door, or clearly put an object in sight, such as a lamp on a table. Dogs will quickly learn that in that situation, trying to get attention will not be responded to, so not worth pursuing.

A Chef’s Guide To Sustainable Dining

Wondering how to cut food waste when cooking at home? Looking for sustainable restaurants and places to eat? Award-winning eco-friendly chef Adam Handling is here to help with a guide to sustainable dining.

Adam Handling

Adam Handling by Tim Green

Adam Handling

Multiple award-wining Scottish chef Adam Handling began his culinary journey as the first ever trainee chef at luxury hotel Gleneagles, going on to become the youngest ever head chef at Fairmont in St Andrews. He is now the chef-owner of three London restaurants, two bars and a deli, and recently became chef patron at new Chelsea hotel Belmond Cadogan – aged just 30.

Sustainable dining is a big part of Adam’s ethos. His deli, Bean & Wheat, focuses on reducing food waste, cleverly using offcuts from his neighbouring restaurant, The Frog Hoxton. Two of his other venues, Eve Bar and Adam Handling Chelsea, are completely zero waste. Here Adam shares his favourite sustainable dining spots, and gives us some tips on how to cut waste when cooking at home.

Bean & Wheat

Bean & Wheat, Tim Green

‘I opened my sustainable café and beer shop, Bean & Wheat, because sustainability is a key focus for my group. We’re aiming eventually to be 100 per cent zero waste, and Bean & Wheat goes a long way in helping that mission. The café utilises all by-products and offcuts created in my restaurants, ensuring that nothing is thrown away needlessly. For example, I’ll take the livers from the whole ducks I use in my restaurants and turn it into duck liver parfait to be sold in the café in jars. Now that Bean & Wheat is located at the same site as The Frog Hoxton, it has improved this cycle of sustainability as has reduced our carbon footprint to zero. We also have a food lab at the Hoxton site where we preserve fresh produce with brining, curing and fermenting. This is a great way to reduce waste and preserve food for longer.

Adam Handling Chelsea

Adam Handling Chelsea, Tim Green

‘We’re always looking at new ways to improve on what we’ve already achieved, but my approach to sustainability and zero waste will always be at the heart of my venues. Eve Bar and the recently opened bar at Adam Handling Chelsea are completely zero waste. We use the by-products from the restaurants, peelings and watermelon rinds to produce drinks and garnishes.’

Adam’s Sustainable Dining Top Tips: How To Cut Food Waste At Home

There are so many ways to reduce food waste. Just taking a second to think ‘have I absolutely exhausted all possibilities with this ingredient?’ before throwing it away is a great start. I think the most important thing that we can do as chefs is to encourage and share our knowledge with as many people as we can. What we do in our kitchens to reduce food waste can also be implemented at home and I hope to encourage as many people as I can to adopt sustainable techniques in their own kitchens – it’s about changing attitudes. As well as having an impact on the environment, you will also find that reducing waste saves you money – what’s not to love?

  • There are parts of vegetables that are often thrown away. However, by being creative, you’ll find there are many ways to use scraps to make other dishes. In my restaurants, anything that can be used gets used. When cooking at home, you can add the often-discarded stalks of vegetables to stir fries or blitz them into soups or a pesto. If you’re making a Sunday lunch, don’t throw away the broccoli or cauliflower stalks, instead keep them and roast them in the oven to make a salad for the next day.
  • We pickle, ferment and age everything that you can possibly think of – it’s a great way to preserve fresh produce and limit food waste by using scraps. It’s also easy to do at home and you can make your own kimchi by pickling cauliflower leaves. Just cover in salt and water for about 48hrs, then rinse the leaves and make a kimchi paste of garlic, ginger, rice wine vinegar and gochugaru. Cover the leaves with the paste and leave in a sealed jar away from sunlight in a reasonably cool space to ferment. The longer you leave it, the more sour becomes. I love to dice my kimchi and eat it with roast pork.
  • Write a food list before you go shopping and stick to it! It’s easy to get drawn in by all the choice at supermarkets. The main thing is to use British wherever possible and be smart with the products you’re using. Buying British fruit and vegetables in season is key for living more sustainably – not only is it better for the environment but the flavour is so much better. Being spring, there is an abundance of fantastic ingredients in season including asparagus, rhubarb and wild garlic. At Frog by Adam Handling in Covent Garden we have a fantastic spring dish of asparagus with garlic emulsion and garlic flowers. It’s great to be able to celebrate and showcase British produce when it’s at its best.

Adam’s Pick: The Best Zero Waste Restaurants

E5 Bakehouse Cafe

E5 Bakehouse: An independent café/bakery in Hackney which uses locally sourced produce, including London-milled flours to make a wide range of delicious breads.

Daylesford Brompton Cross

Daylesford: The cafe and farm shop sell organic meat and dairy along with seasonal fruit and vegetables, which all come from their sustainable farm in the UK.

Silo: I’ve known Dougie McMaster for a while and admire what he’s created with his zero-waste restaurant Silo.

Book 2!!! Help Me Pick The Cover and Title (Plus The Shots That Didn’t Make The Cut)

My second book is due in a couple of months (eek, and not in a cute “eek” kinda way), and the cover and title decision can’t wait until life gets back to normal. As you know I like to crowdsource all my major life decisions so today I’m showing you the options to get your input, I’ve got it down to two. We had so much fun shooting it (months ago, obviously) and while there can only be one cover, I love most of these a lot. Here you go:

I want this book to be a classic, something that is timeless so – we could go more classic, thus “The Drapes of Wrath”, which seems kinda timely for these darker days but I think that “Wrath” might be too off-brand for me. Being the huge romantic that I am, I’m leaning more towards “Eat, Pray, Loveseat” as loveseats are the unsung heroes of living room seating, so plugging it into the title certainly makes me happy. That subtitle also feels right to me.

I collaborated with Daniel Craig on “The Girl With The Style Breakthrough” and you guys, he is as lovely in person as he seems (and very handsome). It does feel more like my first book title to me, with an emphasis on style, not design. “Style And The City” is what my publisher is leaning towards, but having two children that are likely going to read this book someday, I kinda wish I hadn’t posed nude for that shoot.

These two really didn’t feel right to me. “A Tale of Two Settees” just doesn’t pop color-wise. And while “Couch 22” has a nice punch of color, I don’t even really say “couch” and much prefer the word “sofa”. It’s like “vase” or “VAHHZE,” our rule is if it’s over $100 you pronounce it VAHZE (rhyming with Oz), under $100 its “vase,” like base, FYI. Free tip!!

I LOVE this one and almost called it the day of the shoot – THIS IS IT. Ryan (Gosling) felt strongly about shooting in real rain versus a set (or doing something in post-production, my suggestion) which made the shoot itself hard but admittedly he was right and it turned out beautiful. Please note the size of my hand.

Now for the FINAL COVER IMAGE – ARE YOU READY????

I’m so, so happy with it. Bringing in Patrick Swayze (RIP that national treasure) is what tipped it from “good” to the quiet whisper of “yes, that’s it, that is THE cover.” I hope you agree 🙂

Let me know what your thoughts are!!! Which one would you buy first at a bookstore in a year from now??

**Seemed like the right day (and general time) to bring these back. We did them originally for Styled and I TOTALLY forgot about them til I referenced Dirty Dancing last week. Nobody on my team had ever seen them before so hopefully, they were new to you and made you smile today. Do you want to know what is not a joke? Brian and I used to do “the lift” at parties, TRUE STORY. Sometimes successfully, many times well, NOT. 🙂 Thanks to my friend Chandler for the photoshop work 🙂

Happy April Fools and come back later today for our VERY serious design-related content:) But seriously no more jokes. xx

Sarah Beeny's super simple tip to transform a home without spending a penny

Already bored with your home? Sarah Beeny’s tip to transform a home without spending a penny will give your house a new lease on life.

Related: Sarah Beeny’s bold choice of flooring is wowing the internet – but do you love it?

Speaking on the Chris Evans Breakfast Show on Virgin radio, the renovating guru shared her top tip for making you feel better in your own space.

Sarah Beeny’s tip to transform a home

‘At the moment so many people are stuck at home, and it is a terrible time for lots of people,’ she said on the show. ‘But I think if we try and see as many positives, as there are many negatives to focus on.’

Sarah Beeny's tip to transform a home 2

‘If you are stuck at home do one of the most basic things. If you actually just reorganise your room it can make a huge difference,’ she explains.

‘Most people’s sofas are just where they put them when their arm hurt when moving from one flat into another flat. They are carrying their sofa and think let’s put it down, and there it is 20 years later.’

‘So actually just putting all the furniture in the middle of the room, and putting it all in a different place. You might find it loosens up space in the most amazing way,’ she adds.

So before you hop in the virtual queue at Wickes to start an ambitious home makeover, why not give Sarah Beeny’s tip ago. She might be the queen of incredible renovations but her tip is so simple, you have no excuse not to give it ago.

If you have hard floors, try popping your furniture on rugs so you can slide them around with more ease to see where they might look good.

However, if you are living alone during the lockdown, please be careful before you start moving large pieces of furniture around on your own.

All The Bedding Combos EHD is Coveting (And Some Products We Have And LOVE)

As I sit on my bed writing this, I am reminded how fortunate I am to have this space that acts as my own personal oasis. Quarantine, if nothing else, has opened my eyes to how much peace a bedroom can bring. Now more than ever comfortability and security have been top of mind and what is more comforting than a bed?? I can’t summon a better comparison (though my boyfriend will argue that’s because I love sleep more than the average adult human. OKAY FINE. Sue me). But nevertheless, I know I am not alone because today EHD is all on board to talk about the best and most fun part about designing a bedroom. These are our dream bedding combos and I would gladly cuddle up in every one of them.

But first, if you’ve ever wanted to know Emily’s everyday bed styling techniques (I know I have) this video will give you the inside scoop:

Emily

  1. Channel Switch Velvet Quilt | 2. Logan Pillow | 3. Luxe Core Sheet Set in Graphite Grid | 4. Soft Down Pillow | 5. Luxe Duvet Cover | 6. Pinstripe Blanket

I love my bed and bedding, so I’m just going to recommend what I have up here at the mountain house. The pillows and duvet are my favorites in weight and fluff (they are fluffy but really squishy so they look big and full but really aren’t). Brian likes pillows that are like 4 years old and lumpy…. So we don’t need to talk about them. I love this quilt, it’s so soft and that punch of color makes me really, really happy. I definitely pull it up in the middle of the night when I get chilly. And lastly, if we are talking about bedding we might as well talk about pajamas too. You guys know I love a pajama set and this one is my absolute favorite (so thin but not see-through, drapes really well, easy to layer, doesn’t cut-in and so cozy. I wear it year-round).

Sara

  1. Hearth & Hand Striped Lumbar Pillow | 2. Nublado Round Pillow | 3. Quilt in Coal | 4. Organic Crinkled Sheets | 5. Airy Gauze Throw Blanket | 6. Cloud Cotton Duvet Cover Set

I was super excited for this assignment, mainly because I love bedding. But I didn’t really know where to start, so I started combing through my recent bedroom pins to see if there were any trends I was subconsciously into. Turns out that trend is neutral bedding – are we surprised? NOT REALLY. But one thing that did surprise me was that a few of those pins had a trendy new color popping up – rust. So I used that as much starting point. Bring in a rust piece, and build around it with softer neutrals. I call this look the muted graphic. I personally abhor stonewashed linen on my bed – I’ve had it before and it’s so heavy and stiff. And I need my bedding to be soft and instantly warm, so I went with soft wrinkle friendly cottons, and warm gauzy materials in my dream bedding board.

Veronica

  1. Microfiber Sheet Set | 2. Shelly Round Velvet Pillow | 3. Line Art Wink Throw Pillow | 4. Rumi Shag Body Pillow | 5. Faye Braided Throw Pillow | 6. Diamond Tuft Throw Blanket | 7. Buffy Breeze Comforter | 8. Waffle Kit Fringed Throw Blanket

Ok after seeing all that, you are probably thinking “whyyyy so much white?” and it’s because my room is literally a black hole (not literally, but you get it. It is very dark in there most of the time and my roommate jokes that “we live in darkness”), and I would love nothing more than to give it more life and light with a brighter color palette. I have no windows in my room, only one door out to the balcony, and it can get a little doom and gloom sometimes, ya feel me?? The reason I picked this color combination/inspiration is because I am super into the Boho style of rooms and my current room is the exact opposite (I mean how cute is that winky pillow?! It’s giving me major Parisian Cafe vibes. And the orange fringe blanket?! Come onnnn). Even though I am a very warm sleeper as I’ve discussed before, I still love to cuddle up with blankets when called for; Hence, why I have two very fun options! My color pallet right now is pretty dark and I think it’s time to change that! The Boho style is super vibrant and cute, and I need something that’s going to add some sunshine to my day the second I wake up to get me going. And yes, I do plan on getting hanging plants to bring in even more life 🙂

Jess

  1. Italian Velvet Pillow Cover | 2. Embroidered Cushion Cover | 3. Toddle Pillow | 4. Linen Dijon Sheet Set | 5. Vintage Wash Solid Sheet Set | 6. Linen Duvet Cover Set | 7. Channeled Cotton Quilt | 8. Crinkle Stripe Throw

I know that my inspo pic doesn’t look a ton like my actual combo. To be honest, I don’t particularly love a lot of the pieces in the photo itself. However, I love how I feel when I look at it, which sometimes is just as much of an inspiration starting point as what your inspiration literally looks like. Fun fact: I actually pinned this photo years ago and still have the same feeling every time I look at it. What feeling is that? Happiness. I loved the array of colors, the unexpected mix of styles and overall personality. Plus I really love that mustard comforter. So for my combo, I kept the mustard color but toned down the other colors to make it feel more modern. I wanted it to feel layered, cozy and not too serious (but still cool). I also made sure to play with pattern scale so it had a balanced visual dimension. I think my favorite piece is that burgundy and blue throw because it’s basically a large scale gird (a pattern that I am very much still in love with:)).

Julie

1.Cultiver Linen Duvet Cover Set in Bluestone | 2. Printed Cotton Percale Sheet Set | 3.Urban Outfitters Slip Eye Mask in Caramel | 4. Rory Tufted Throw Pillow |5. La Duna Lumbar Pillow | 6. Round Velvet Cushion | 7 .Slowdown Studio Arthur Throw | 8. Waffle Black and White Throw

After I finished picking everything out I realized that this bedding combo is VERY similar to the one I already own but like someone turned up the saturation. So I guess we all know for sure now that when it comes to bedding I love some green, mixed with a graphic throw and a neutral lumbar pillow. Hey, at least I added that pop of yellow and burnt orange in the throw pillows (see it’s “new” Jess, so don’t make me re-do it cause it’ll probably be just a crazier variation of this one). When I start to design I don’t really like to begin with an overall inspiration photo of a room. I will get too stuck on the details of that space comparing it to my own and then get disappointed if I can’t find something as cool (because of budget) or don’t have the room. Like my own bedroom design, I like to start with an individual piece for the inspiration and in this case, I bet you can tell which object I gravitated towards first. If you guessed that amazing graphic throw from Slowdown studio then you just won a virtual hug from me.

As I was scrolling through my Pinterest board looking for bedding inspiration, sitting amongst way too many all-white and neutral bedding combos (am I really THAT boring??) was this rustic Spanish room. This was the only photo I could find that felt calm, cozy, but also full of life which is exactly what I want in a bedroom. I am extremely attracted to the lazy yet sophisticated look of it. The color palette + how the sheets are wrinkled and the pillows are not perfectly arranged makes me so happy. Someone LIVES in this room and gives it the love it deserves. Needless to say I want my bedroom to look and feel exactly like this, so I did my best to create a bedding combo that accentuated what I love about this room. I needed pops of color with whites and neutrals sprinkled in for that added layer of coziness. I also chose products with different fabrics and textures so it would feel natural and “lived in”.

That is all we have for you today. Now we all want to hear from you. Do you love pulling together fantasy bedding combos as much as we do or are we complete interior design nerds who have nothing better to do? What other fantasy pairings would you like to see from us in the future? Meet us in the comments and let’s talk all the best cozy bedding. xx
