Guide to London Craft Week 2020

This year’s London Craft Week was due to take place in May, but due to Covid-19 it couldn’t go ahead. Thankfully the event was postponed rather than cancelled, and it’s now returning to the capital from 30 September – 10 October with over 250 exhibitions, workshops and more. Here we bring you the highlights.

London Craft Week 2020: What’s On?

300 Objects: An Inaugural Exhibition for Modern Day Patrons

Regent Street’s Quadrant Arcade will host an exhibition of 300 pieces by exciting emerging makers alongside established artists and craftspeople, with selections by guest curators including Martin Brudnizki, Alice Fisher and Russell Tovey. 30 September – 10 October, 11am – 5pm

Two Temple Place: A Guided Tour

Tucked away off the Strand lies a somewhat hidden architectural marvel, Two Temple Place. Originally called Astor House, the building was once owned by William Waldorf, The Viscount Astor. Built by architect John Loughborough – often referred to as the godfather of modern neo gothic design – Two Temple Place is a true feast for the eyes: inside you’ll find a phantasmagoria of exquisite craft: chandeliers, tapestries, statues, stained-glass, patchwork, you name it. It’s now owned by arts charity The Bulldog Trust, and you can book onto a guided tour during London Craft Week. Various dates and times from 1 ­– 10 October, book here

The Natural Room – Designer’s Tour at Sarah Myerscough Gallery

Sarah Myerscough has curated an exhibition which explores our human connection to the natural world, encouraging us to look more closely at the objects surrounding us. Works on display include organic perishable vessels made using discarded flora by Marcin Rusak, furniture created using natural resin-like bee by-products by Marlène HuisSoud and Wycliffe Stutchbury’s new ambitious pieces made from holly bush, oak and bogwood. Designer Peter Marigold will be giving various tours of the exhibition throughout the festival. 30 September – 10 October

Craft Matters at Cox London

As part of the Pimlico Road Series, Cox London will be showcasing a new body of work which celebrates traditional crafts, from wax working to plaster casting. On 1 October they’ll be hosting a discussion on why it’s important to keep traditional crafts alive, joined by interior designer and antiques dealer Max Rollitt. 1 October, 6 – 8pm

In Conversation with Kit Kemp, Kate Malone, Nina Campbell and Grant Gibson at Ham Yard Hotel

Design writer, editor and podcaster Grant Gibson will be chairing a digital panel discussion on the benefits of ceramics and creativity, and the importance of championing craftspeople. He’ll be joined by ceramicist Kate Malone, interior designer Nina Campbell and founder and creative director of Firmdale Hotels Kit Kemp. The conversation will celebrate the launch of FiredUp4, a project created to fundraise for the provision of pottery studios providing access to young people through the Onside Youth Zone network. 1 October, 6.30 – 8pm, book here

Goldsmiths’ Fair

Tune into the first ever digital Goldsmiths’ Fair, which features collections from the UK’s best jewellers and silversmiths. Browse over 1,000 handcrafted pieces, explore online exhibition The Brooch Unpinned – a celebration of the art of the brooch – and listen to inspiring stories from emerging makers via Zoom. 30 September – 6 October, goldsmithsfair.co.uk

Blown, Bound and Bold at Vessel Gallery

Chris Day’s fascinating debut at Vessel Gallery explores the treatment of black people in Britain and America. Glass is his medium, as well as materials derived from heating and electrical systems – a nod to Day’s former career as a plumber. ‘My main purpose is to engage the audience on issues that are hard to confront on many levels, using art to help overcome some of the traumas that haunt our collective past,’ says Day. The glass, he explains, is ‘just like the human spirit attempting to break free, creating areas of resistance, while still being overcome by the boundaries that confine it’. 30 September – 8 October, 11am – 5pm

Ways of Seeing at The New Craftsmen

Collaborative project Ways of Seeing brings together maker and interior designer, inviting three acclaimed interior designer studios to explore the different ways they view and value craft. Maria Speake of Retrouvius, Emma Burns of Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler, and Sasha von Meister and Tom Bartlett of Waldo Works will be taking part, each developing their own room concept in response to pieces from The New Craftsmen makers’ collections. 30 September – 3 October and 5 – 8 October, 11am – 6pm

Crafting Sustainable Luxury at Mulberry

Mulberry will discuss how sustainability is at the heart of their design and manufacture, from carbon-neutral operations at their Somerset factories to sourcing European gold standard environmentally-accredited leathers. 30 September – 2 October and 5 – 9 October, 10am – 6pm, booking not necessary

Create Day

Heatherwick Studio

Keen to show off your own creativity? Create Day invites crafters from across the UK to open their studios, factories, workshops, kitchens and homes to share their skills with a global audience. Taking place on the final day of London Craft Week, Create Day will run for 24 hours, beginning in Asia before moving to the UK, Europe and North America. Live-streams, film, demonstrations and tutorials will be running throughout the day, featuring appearances from British designer Tom Dixon, architect Thomas Heatherwick, interior designer Kelly Hoppen and Mexican artist Fernando Laposse. 10 October

The Ainu Collection at SoShiro, Marylebone

New art, craft and design gallery SoShiro will officially launch during the festival with its debut exhibition, The Ainu Collection. SoShiro is the brainchild of Shiro Muchiri, a Kenyan-born, Italian-trained interior architect, designer, curator and tastemaker. His new exhibition explores the craft of the indigenous people of Northern Japan through furniture, accessories and objects, featuring work from award-winnign sculptor Toru Kaizawa. 30 September – 4 October and 6 – 8 October, 10.30am – 5.30pm
