On Turning 40…

Emily Henderson First Mountain House Summer 12Img 6031

I turn 40 tomorrow, so to celebrate, I spent about 26 hours writing a post that was titled “The 40 Things You Don’t Know About Me,” mostly because I love a good self-reflection marathon and treat self-indulgence like a sport. I thought it would be “fun” and “easy” but it was probably the most daunting, and then eye-opening thing I’ve written in a long while, where I realized some real patterns that I hadn’t seen before, and could trace where they came from. It was like watching the Emily Henderson bio-pic as an outsider and as the 40 years went by, I found it, well, first, rather entertaining, with plot twists that I can now see were unexpected, at the same time I can now see how it all makes sense. Your patterns don’t just come from nowhere; your triggers aren’t random. Your childhood and teenage years really affect who you are in a way that is kinda terrifying as a parent myself to confront.

I’m not ready to publish it in its current form. I think it’s more of a series of essays—it was already 22 pages which no one wants to read. Also, not having the gene for embarrassment and rarely shame makes it hard for me to remember that there are many others in my life who value their privacy. BORING.

I will say this: I knew this would happen, you hear about it all the time, but turning 40 does mean giving less f*cks. It means that I make more choices for me and my family. There is so much more ownership of your experiences and you start being like “thank god that terrible thing happened, because I am now ______ because of it.” I feel the need to prove nothing to anybody and I have become so clear with my limitations, boundaries and expectations from everyone. Almost in a cold way which I would like to improve on.

Going forward, I want to focus on my relationships with those in my life who I’m so strongly connected to, on putting even more inspiration and positivity into the world, on working on all my vulnerabilities and exposing them even more. I’ve hustled so hard, all through my 20s and 30s, I’m honestly exhausted, so guess what? IT’S TIME TO ENJOY IT.

There might be some big moves this year, some pivots and shifts that will be shocking but not necessarily surprising. It’s all REALLY GOOD STUFF, I promise.

I’ve got to go. I’m up at the mountain house with my family and some friends, playing a mean game of Uno with a 3 and 5 year old, sipping a glass of champagne.

Have a lovely weekend. xx

The Best Afternoon Teas in London

Afternoon tea is quite possibly the most British of all institutions. But once in a while, an egg and cress sandwich and a scone need a little jazzing up. These are the current best afternoon teas in London, from the traditional to the innovative to the quirky.

The Best Afternoon Teas in London

Van Gogh Afternoon Tea, The Rosewood

Van Gogh Afternoon Tea at The Rosewood

Experience Van Gogh’s art in a whole new way – through delectable finger sandwiches and pastries inspired by the artist’s most famous paintings, and classic desserts influenced by Van Gogh’s homes of the Netherlands and Paris that are almost too beautiful to eat. Highlights include a sweet rendering of The Starry Night in the form of chocolate vanilla sable biscuit, coconut cheesecake, matcha tea sponge, strawberry miring gel and yuzu. The afternoon tea is inspired by the Tate’s latest exhibition on Van Gogh and Britain, so once you’ve had your culinary fill head on over and have a gander. £110pp, £55 extra with a glass of Champagne. rosewoodhotels.com

Momo

Momo Afternoon Tea

Mixing up afternoon tea traditions is Momo, the recently reimagined North African restaurant in Mayfair. Here classic finger sandwich combinations are given a Moroccan twist: halloumi croque with tomato and basil, Tunisian fricassee with egg, tuna and olives, and cucumber with labneh and mint all feature. Mediterranean flavours are infused throughout the menu, with desserts including Muhalabiya, a Middle Eastern milk pudding delicacy with strawberry rosewater, and date scones with quince and prickly pear jam. All this can be enjoyed on their new palm terrace, dotted with mimosa plants, lanterns and traditional rattan chairs. £32pp with tea, £42pp with a glass of Champagne. momo.london

Crown Jewels Afternoon Tea at Rotunda, Four Seasons Hotel

Crown Jewels Afternoon Tea Four Seasons

Taking inspiration from its view over the Tower of London, Rotunda’s Crown Jewels Afternoon Tea celebrates the most visited artefacts in Britain. While the classically British finger sandwiches like egg mayonnaise with truffle oil or minted cucumber are expectedly delicious, the main affair is courtesy of the restaurant’s executive pastry chef who has created a selection of pastries inspired by the Crown Jewels themselves. A Griotte Amarena cherry and liquorice macaron topped with silver jewel is among the array of tasty delights. Of course, homemade scones with seasonal jams and Devonshire clotted cream are the closing event. For an afternoon tea fit for a royal, book a private roof terrace where the British pastime can be enjoyed overlooking the iconic landmark and the River Thames. £35pp. fourseasons.com

OXO Tower Restaurant’s Vegan Afternoon Tea

OXO Tower Restaurant's Vegan Afternoon Tea

The OXO Tower has been a recognisable London institution since it was built in the 1900s, but what’s inside it is by no means antiquated. The OXO Tower Restaurant has tapped into the undeniably huge spike in demand for plant-powered food by launching a vegan afternoon tea, available throughout the month of January. Being a non-vegan myself, I was intrigued to taste vegan food and being an afternoon-tea lover, I was equally intrigued to find out if it would be as good as the classic afternoon teas I had tasted. The verdict? It is just as good, if not better.

As well as my perfectly chilled glass of prosecco, I went for the ‘Thirst Quenching” tea, which is a blend of strong green tea bursting with hints of pineapple. The creativity behind this menu is clear and appeals to vegans and non-vegans alike. If you’re not completely stuffed from the array of sandwiches on the first tier, which includes homemade ‘cheese’ and pickle and golden beetroot with aged balsamic in rosemary Russian rye bread, continue on with the second tier which holds an ‘avocado shot’ made with creamy avo and almond, chestnut and mushroom ‘sausage’ rolls, and Bajis packed with flavours I’d never tasted before. All this is to be enjoyed with the homemade piccalilli, and a minty-coconutty dip. The sweet selection includes scones with clotted ‘cream’ and jam, mini lemon ‘meringue’ pies which I found largely lighter and fluffier than the desert’s non-vegan counterpart, and about three other delightful treats. To top it all off, the view from the OXO Tower Restaurant, along with the ultra-friendly staff, make this afternoon tea experience a memorable one. I might not be turning fully vegan just yet, but if I could have this vegan afternoon tea every day, it certainly would make the change a whole lot easier (and yummier!). £45pp (including a glass of prosecco). harveynichols.com. Reviewed by Kerri Stolerman.

Cadogan’s by Adam Handling

Cadogan's by Adam Handling

An afternoon tea experience has launched at the recently opened Belmond Cadogan Hotel in Chelsea, designed by award-winning restauranteur Adam Handling. The menu is inspired by happy memories at Adam’s grandmother’s house, designed to evoke nostalgia and feelings of warmth – of course, with an elegant touch. Savoury offerings include sausage rolls with brown sauce and salt cod croquettes, alongside a selection of traditional sandwiches such as roasted chicken with lemon thyme mayonnaise on malt bread. Sweet delights, meanwhile, are inspired by the story of notable scientist, collector and traveller Sir Hans Sloane, in honour of the building’s historic location on Sloane Street. Quintessential British ingredients are set alongside international elements: desserts include a Granny Smith apple & lemongrass cremeux, a white chocolate & raspberry mousse, and a passion fruit curd tart. Tea offerings are equally exciting, with an extensive selection available from Newby Teas, including two signature Adam Handling assam and breakfast blends, available exclusively at the hotel. To celebrate the launch of the new Matthew Williamson range from Newby Teas, a special offering will be available throughout Afternoon Tea Week, with pastries including Orange & Lemongrass Cremeux, Passion Fruit Curd Tart with Coconut Mousse and Salted Caramel Sacher with Milk Chocolate Chantilly. Served daily from 1.30-5.30pm. adamhandlingchelsea.co.uk

London Landmarks Afternoon Tea at Town House at The Kensington

London Landmarks Afternoon Tea at Town House at The Kensington

This London-inspired afternoon tea takes inspiration from historic and iconic landmarks around the city such as a telephone box, Big Ben, The Gherkin and The Shard, with treats including a rhubarb mousse, lemon curd tart, bridge rolls and more. £42pp or £54.50 with a glass of Champagne. townhousekensington.com

The Savoy

The Savoy Summer Afternoon Tea

World-renowned for its iconic High Tea, The Savoy is constantly updating its menu to ensure its guests enjoy the very best of the season. Served in the magnificent Thomas Foyer and accompanied by live piano music, The Savoy’s afternoon tea is a London classic with its seasonal cakes and pastries created by executive pastry chef Daniel Pearse. They recently launched a new summer afternoon tea in partnership with JING Tea, with whom they have worked closely with to ensure an optimal tea drinking experience. Light, floral pastries herald the finest ingredients of the season, from the British strawberry to the mirabelle, creating delicacies like The Savoy Seasonal Summer Fruit Tartlet, Mango and Passionfruit Jelly and Banana Cremeux. fairmont.com

The Goring

The Goring Afternoon Tea

Served since 1910, Afternoon Tea at The Goring in Victoria is particularly special. As the only hotel to hold a Royal Warrant from HM The Queen for hospitality services, you can be absolutely certain that everything upon your visit will be impeccable. The afternoon tea is classic in style, reflecting The Goring’s dedication to tradition as the only luxury hotel in London still owned and run by the family that built it. Why mess with perfection? Expect dainty and delicate finger sandwiches, homemade scones and pastries, and unparalleled service. Enjoy your tea in the garden during the summer months for a quintessentially English experience. From £49 per person, every day. thegoring.com

Jumeirah Carlton Tower

Jumeirah Carlton Tower

The team behind the afternoon tea in the elegant Chinoiserie at Jumeirah Carlton Tower in Belgravia have been awarded the coveted number one spot in ‘Afternoon Tea of the Year 2018’. The competition process had stringent timings and, due to the fact that they didn’t have access to a freezer, even involved the team biking their sorbet from their hotel kitchen to the competition’s headquarters – dedication to the cause. It is easy to see how they nabbed their prize – the mouthwatering Symphony Afternoon Tea is not only a feast for the senses but also a clever concept, fashioned on the four movements of a symphonic orchestral experience. It was further inspired by the resident harpist who serenades guests in the Chinoiserie as they enjoy the afternoon tea.

All the traditional trimmings have been given a twist, beginning with a selection of savoury cones filled with beetroot hummus or the Indian spiced chicken and mango and followed, not by the classic triangular sandwiches, but treats such as a Brioche bridge roll with Loch Fyne smoked salmon and duck egg mayonnaise. Of the delicacies, our favourite was the Sicilian pistachio éclair with cranberry compote. The famed sorbet that was rushed across London ends the experience to soothe your palate with coconut and lemongrass. Ask your server which tea pairing they recommend, or go for the 90 minute bottomless Laurent Perrier champagne accompaniment. Can’t decide? Drink your tea, then your champagne. True British luxury. £39 per person, or £49 per person for 90 minutes of bottomless champagne. jumeriah.com

The Wolseley

The Wolseley Best of British

You can’t help but feel that you’re a ‘someone’ from the moment you step inside the classic and timeless Wolseley, which is a British institution in itself. Where better, then, to enjoy a ‘Best of British’ Afternoon Tea? The Wolseley recently launched just that – featuring individual Victoria Sponges and Sherry Trifles alongside traditional scones with clotted cream and homemade jam. You won’t find jazzed-up finger sandwiches, either – they stick to the classics for a reason. Traditional fillings of Coronation Chicken, Beef and Horseradish, Cheddar and Pickle, and Smoked Salmon are delightfully nostalgic while being of unquestionably superior quality to what you grew up on. A place so good, AA Gill wrote a whole book about it – and this new Afternoon Tea is another excellent (and delicious) chapter in The Wolseley’s ever-glorious repertoire. From £29.75 per person, daily. thewolseley.com

Hotel Cafe Royal

Hotel Cafe Royal

Just around the corner from the hustle and bustle of Piccadilly Circus, the Hotel Cafe Royal’s ‘Queen of Afternoon Teas’ celebrates the history of the historic English tradition of afternoon tea, within the opulent Oscar Wilde Bar. The Queen of Afternoon Teas has been curated to pay homage to British monarch Queen Victoria, as 2019 marks her 200th anniversary. Enjoy a sumptuous menu that features ingredients and dishes that came into fashion during her reign, including some of her personal favourites, accompanied by teas, champagne, and a live pianist. The Queen of Afternoon Tea is available daily from 12-5:30pm by reservation only, £55 per person. hotelcaferoyal.com

The Landmark

The Landmark Afternoon Tea

Afternoon tea at The Landmark is served in their Winter Garden, a beautifully light and airy glass-roofed atrium complete with palm trees. Sandwiches are traditional: think smoked Scottish salmon, organic egg mayonnaise and mustard cress, and coronation chicken on walnut bread, followed by a delectable selection of desserts – our top pick is the hazelnut and coffee opera cake. From £45 per person, £52 with a glass of champagne. landmarklondon.co.uk

The Ampersand Hotel

This is a novelty afternoon tea done really, really well, with seriously good food (the cheddar and thyme scones served with truffle butter are the star) and a really clever drinks menu. £49.50 per person. www.ampersandhotel.com.

The Chesterfield Mayfair

Chesterfield Mayfair’s The Original Sweet Shop Afternoon Tea

If you’re looking for a child-friendly afternoon tea option in London, look no further than the Chesterfield Mayfair’s The Original Sweet Shop Afternoon Tea. With pastries and cakes the flavour of retro sweetshop favourites, delicious chocolate-chip scones and a host of savoury treats, it’s a must-try for both adults and children with a sweet tooth. Highlights include the Coca-Cola slice, the enormous peanut-butter cup and the fizzy apple mousse. And of course, the trip wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the retro sweet cart manned by the in-house Candyman who will help young guests fill a bag with old-school penny sweets and pick-and-mix favourites. Younger guests can enjoy the afternoon tea served alongside a milkshake or tea, priced at £21.50. Adults can opt to add a glass of something sparkling with the Champagne Tea (£47 per person), including a glass of brut, rosé or white label Lanson Champagne. For £40 per person The Original Sweet Shop Afternoon Tea is served with loose leaf or flowering tea, coffee or hot chocolate. chesterfieldmayfair.com

Alexander Edwards for Wayfair

You two have created such a beautiful home together. How long have you lived here?

Louise explains. ‘I moved in 6 years ago when I left university and the home has evolved so much since. For the first few years I lived surrounded by an amalgamation of my mum and dad’s old furniture that they didn’t want any more.’

‘I moved in with Louise about three years ago,’ adds Ryan.’ I went from a two-bedroom flat share to a beautiful townhouse with open space and a garden. I hit the jackpot huh?’

What were you looking for when redesigning the living room?

‘The living room is adjacent to the study so it was important when planning furniture that there was a good flow between the two rooms.’ explains Louise.’ I wanted the colours to be fairly neutral, using different tones of wood. Of course, we wanted our living room to be a cosy space, that allows us to relax in the evenings after work, but at the same time we occasionally use our living room as a space for meetings.’

How would you describe your interior style?

Louise starts, ‘I would describe our interior style as traditional blended with a contemporary touch. At the moment I love a minimalist aesthetic, but Ryan was very keen on the idea of a traditional study area with a large Cambridge desk. I knew that the space wouldn’t fit such clunky antiquated pieces so let’s just say we compromised. I wanted to make sure that things looked right whilst also being ‘liveable’ and comfortable. For me it’s all about balance.’

Ryan is in agreement. ‘My interior style is traditional countryside home, with heavy dark woods, high ceilings, low hanging lights, dim ambiance, chunky carpets and Chesterfield sofas. Think Soho Farmhouse style. However, we don’t live in a countryside house with high ceilings, so that interior style doesn’t translate well in the space we have. Hence the design we went with for our home and office and living room was a blend of the traditional look with a slightly more contemporary version. Old meets new, but still has the connection and the feel of maybe being in Winston Churchill’s home.’

What are your favourite items in the new space?

‘My favourite pieces are the desk, and the bar cabinet,’ says Louise, who worked alongside interiors experts Wayfair on the transformation. ‘I love the rustic charm in our study with the dark furniture and gold accessories, whereas our living room has a few more modern touches. The coolest piece I own is the leather love seat.’

The home office

What were you looking for when redesigning the home office?

‘For me it was important to declutter,’ says Louise. ‘I have SO much stuff arriving through the door everyday that it can be overwhelming. Storage was a priority for me and before we worked with Wayfair we had next to nothing. Now we have some beautiful cabinets that I have allocated to different things.’

‘Two things – we wanted a functional office space,’ continues Ryan. ‘A nice desk where we can both work comfortably. But we also wanted the office to be a welcoming space. Because it’s situated on the ground floor, the whole house almost revolves around it.’

Where do you look to for inspiration when decorating your home?

Louise answers. ‘We look for inspiration in different places… from Instagram and Pinterest, to traveling to different countries and staying in different places. They all have influenced my taste in interior design and have inspired me immensely.’

Evidently, Koji’s a fan of this new rug. But that’s not all he loves, according to Louise, ‘Koji is OBSESSED with the green lounge chair. It’s his hangout spot. He sits there all day long. If anyone else sits on there he’ll jump up and squeeze behind them to make sure we know who’s boss.’

The new IKEA catalogue 2020 – here's a sneak peek of what to expect

They say good things come to those who wait. Here at Ideal Home HQ we’ve been eagerly awaiting the arrival of the new IKEA catalogue 2020.

We love the online offering, as a magazine ourselves we know only too well, you can’t beat a physical copy to flick though – when looking for inspiration. What IKEA do do well is create real rooms that inspire, taking their products to new interior design heights.

More from the interiors giant: Iconic IKEA Billy bookcase gets a makeover – in new trend predicted to be BIG for winter

So what does ‘The Wonderful Everyday’ look like in 2020…

New IKEA catalogue – 5 things we know

IKEA catalogue 2020

1. The IKEA catalogue is available in all stores across the UK and Ireland. The stores keep copies well stocked to ensure every customer can get their hands on a copy.

2. This year’s edition consists of 283 pages. As we know from previous issues those pages will be bursting from top to bottom with inspiration, meaning that’s 283 pages of rooms to devour.

3. The catalogue features six unique homes. Once again this year instead of random rooms – each one shows a mock up of a whole house furnished completely by IKEA. This approach makes the buying experience more relatable, showing a real home that the customer could imagine being their own.

4. Don’t miss out on this yearly spectacular. The IKEA catalogue, like Christmas, only arrives once a year. This is the only catalogue for 2020, with the next edition arriving next summer – 2021, how scary does that sound?!

5. We know globally more than 2000 products are introduced into the range every year. The new catalogue will be filled with so many new treasures. Of these we know there will be the new Billy Bookcase, the smart blinds and the Sonos speakers. We’re excited to see what other new designs make the cut.

6. The Ikea catalogue goes out to over 180 million people in 29 different languages annually. The iconic catalogue has been in existence since 1951.

7. We have a little insider info about the new cover! The model, presumably so at home, actually fell asleep during the shoot! We don’t blame her, we think we’d probably do the same in that comfy set up.

More inspiration: Ikea reveals four genius way customers have revamped products – including a stunning headboard

Hold tight, not long now until you can get your hands on a copy! Beginning of September is all the IKEA team could confirm.

What’s On: The Best Literary Festivals of 2019

Calling all lit-lovers; our guide to the best literary festivals of 2019 is for you. From the book-lovers’ Glastonbury to the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival, we’ve rounded up the best literary festivals of the year so you can get dates in your diary now. Reading glasses on…

Cliveden

Best Literary Festivals of 2019

Insiders/Outsiders

When? March 2019 – March 2020

Where? All over

What? Insiders/Outsiders, a year-long nationwide arts festival taking place from March 2019 to March 2020, celebrates refugees from Nazi Europe and their impact on British culture. Coinciding with the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War, Insiders/Outsiders brings together a vibrant and all-encompassing programme of exhibitions, concerts, dance and theatre performances, film screenings, walks, lectures and literary events all over the UK. An accompanying anthology focusing on the visual arts will be published by Lund Humphries in early March.

Initiated by art historian Monica Bohm-Duchen, Insiders/Outsiders highlights the indelible contribution of the artists, photographers, writers, architects, designers, actors, film-makers, dancers and musicians as well as publishers, art historians, dealers and collectors who, in fleeing Nazi-dominated Europe in the 1930s and 1940s, greatly enriched this country’s culture. Insiders/Outsiders highlights these émigrés’ contemporary relevance and ongoing influence on Britain’s cultural landscape. It will also feature work by descendants of these refugees which explores the legacy

How? insidersoutsidersfestival.org

Cliveden Literary Festival

Cliveden

When? 28 – 29 September 2019

Where? Cliveden House, Buckinghamshire

What? You already know Cliveden as the English country estate steeped in politics, aristocracy, espionage, sex and scandal. So what better home for a celebration of story-telling than this English gem, which has hosted a literary salon since 1666, inspiring writers from Alexander Pope to Sir Winston Churchill.

How? clivedenliteraryfestival.org

Where to Stay? Stoke Park, Stoke Poges, Buckinghamshire. A historic house built in the 1790s by James Wyatt for soldier, scholar and poet John Penn. Choose from splendid traditional bedrooms in the Mansion or contemporary ones in the newly built Pavilion. Stoke Park became Britain’s first country club in 1908; now it is open to all. Doubles from £250.

London Literary Festival

When? October 2019

Where? South Bank Centre

What? There’s always a heavy-weight line-up of the biggest authors and speakers at the capital’s most talked-about literary festival of the year. Previous speakers have included the likes of Hilary Clinton, Philip Pullman and Tom Hanks take to the stage for individually-ticketed events, and this year writers like Ian McEwan, Rose McGowan and Candice Carty-Williams will be taking to the stage.

How? southbankcentre.co.uk

Where to Stay? Four Seasons Hotel London at Ten Trinity Square, Tower Hill. The latest addition to the Four Seasons’ dazzling portfolio is this exquisitely restored former HQ of the Port of London Authority. You will want for nothing in any of the 100 gorgeous bedrooms, spread over the hotel’s first three floors. Those above are dedicated to 41 apartments and a private members’ club. Doubles from £430.

What’s on this week in the town? And in the country? Check out our culture diaries before you fill in yours.

North Cornwall Book Festival

North-Cornwall-Book-Festival2

When? 10 – 13 October 2019

Where? St Endellion Church, Port Isaac

What? Returning for the seventh year, North Cornwall Book Festival offers something slightly different. As an independent, locally-run literary festival, this largely unknown event may not pull some of the bigger names you’ve seen at the country’s larger literary celebrations, however, for what it lacks in size, it certainly makes up for in passion and authenticity. With an abundance of workshops, readings and performances on offer across the weekend, this is certainly not one to miss.

How? Book from 1 July ncornbookfest.org

Where to Stay: Fowey Hall – Fowey, Cornwall. High above the delightful, literary, waterside town of Fowey, which famously inspired author Daphne du Maurier, stands the handsome country house that was also said to be an inspiration for Toad Hall in Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows. There are 36 rooms and suites, all different, all beautifully furnished with antiques and pretty fabrics; the oak-panelled dining room is the setting for delicious dinners, with special menus for children. But don’t think you have to have a family with you to come to Fowey Hall: cleverly, it’s a hotel that works just as well for couples. Doubles from £140.

Cheltenham Literature Festival

Cheltenham Literature Festival

When? 4 – 13 October 2019

Where? Regency Cheltenham

What? The Times and The Sunday Times Cheltenham Literature Festival is the UK’s oldest literary festival. Last year’s guest curators were novelist Sebastian Faulks; V&A Director Tristram Hunt; columnist and activist Scarlett Curtis; historian Peter Frankopan; curator, translator and writer David Karashima; and Junko Takekawa, Senior Arts Programmer at The Japan Foundation. This year, Cotswolds’ Lygon Arms has launched a Walking Book Club hosted by Emily Rhodes, literary journalist. Reading from Cider With Rosie, attendees will feel transported into the 20th century setting of the story. After the countryside walk there’ll be afternoon tea at the hotel and an overnight stay in one of their historic rooms. Walks will occur throughout the Cheltenham Literature Festival, but the first falls on September 5th. Tickets start at £354, book at lygonarmshotel.co.uk

How? www.cheltenhamfestivals.com/literature

Where to Stay: Cowley Manor – Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. From the outside, it’s a stunning Italianate manor house in classical lake and cascade-filled grounds; inside, a flawlessly hip hotel, with 21st-century good looks. And although the style is cool, the welcome is warm from the ever-helpful staff. After checking into your state-of-the-art room – in six categories with plenty for families – you can while away time playing pool in the padded leather Billiards Room, drinking in the funky bar or relaxing on the elegant stone terrace, a suntrap with fabulous views. Doubles from £195

Lefay Resort and Spa, Gargano, Italy

Lefay Resort & Spa

It’s a paradox that finding your inner balance can be aided so admirably gazing into infinity across the magnificent ‘Riviera dei Limoni’ and sweeping Lake Garda.  But such is the power of this heavenly vista that every room is afforded it, and each meal is enjoyed with it as its backdrop. Sustainable to its core, Lefay rests peacefully high up on a hillside into which the spa has been carved – a rich seam of wellness – cavernous, begging to be explored, not used. ‘La Luna nel Lago’, the moon suspended above an indoor salt pool, is an ethereal experience. Treatments are personalised after an initial assessment to target blockages using a refreshing hybrid of Western and classical Chinese medicine. Simply explained and expertly administered by compassionate practitioners, it is a chance to broaden your own knowledge into a different way of understanding the body. The guided walk through the natural beauty of the property isn’t mandatory but should be. Unblocked, energy flows and nourishes you long after you depart. Your mind will return here often, and where the mind goes the body tends to follow.

Book it: Health and Fitness Travel offers 7 nights at Lefay from £1,580pp or £2,265 for single occupancy. Price includes breakfast, a wellness programme and return private transfers; 0203 397 8891 healthandfitnesstravel.com
