Ceramics made in Moscow: Fragile Things

Recently I traveled to Moscow twice. And as much as these trips were a real travel revelation to me, they were equally inspiring. Discovering Moscow as a city was magnificent already. But discovering Russian design and local makers was another level of pleasure for me. I have shared a few discoveries already here – I showed you the restyling of a beautiful Moscow apartment with local design and a minimalistic tabletop styling with some Russian ceramics. And today I want to show you more about the ceramics and their maker Nadia. Meet Fragile Things!

I learned about Fragile Things Ceramics almost by coincidence. The owner of the aforementioned Moscow apartment discovered the pottery on a local arts and crafts market. He forwarded a picture to me as well as the Instagram account of Fragile Things. I was instantly in love! I started following and I put a visit to the studio on my travel list. During my second Moscow visit I headed over to Nadia’s studio.

Nadia is a very lovely personality who invites visitors to her studio which serves as both her work place and shop. She is open, smiling and loves to talk about her passion for clay and making ceramics. Talking with her proved one of my theories over again: Love and passion are the best teachers in life! Nadia is a self-taught potter. She told me when she tried pottery for the first time it was like an epiphany – she knew right away that this is going to be her profession. The clay in her hands felt like a materialized form of love. And looking at Nadia’s work today this love comes through every piece that she made.

Nadia pays attention to natural shapes and natural finishings of her pieces. You won’t find colorful glazes or extraordinary designs. Instead you will find something that feels archaic, earthy, like something that is beyond time and space. Her ceramic pieces are truly special – because it is not only the look of them but also the touch. The changing finishings and surfaces are a haptic pleasure for your senses and once you hold one of her bowls, mugs or vases in your hands, you do not want to let it go. And yes, that happened to me too. So do you wonder when I tell you I left the studio with a bag full of ceramics?

If you ever end up in Moscow one day, I strongly recommend a visit to Nadia’s studio – just text her in advance via Instagram to be sure she is around. Otherwise I warmly recommend a look at her Instagram and website – something tells me that you will fall in love as much as I did with her ceramics.
