Last week I attended the annual imm Cologne design fair. January is always a great month to kick start a new year with the latest design and interior trends. The imm 2020 design show was packed with great furniture designs, old and new labels, a new color vibe and countless ideas for a beautiful home. Here are just a few interior design trends 2020 that caught my eye in Cologne.

My overall highlight was the excellent German Design Tour organized by the German Furniture Association. If you remember, end of last year I was a jury member of their #beingathome / #zuhausesein photo contest, and this tour was the final of the entire competition putting German design in the focus. Brands like Rolf Benz, Kettnaker, Tylko, Freifrau, Schönbuch, Interlübke and more presented their latest design at the imm 2020.

Let me first underline the key insights I brought back from the imm 2020: more and more focus is put on sustainability and modularity/flexibility in furniture design and interior design in general. It is all about solutions that are modular and that grow with us and our changing needs. From a single home over a couple housing to a family dwelling – nowadays furniture should be able to adapt itself to our needs. Instead of getting rid of furniture and buying new things, we adapt the existing furnishing to our new situation. Also the boundaries between indoor and outdoor furniture is blurring more and more. Nowadays you can use furniture pieces for both situations and that often not-so-cool ‘outdoorsy’ design look is long passé!

Brands like Rolf Benz presented the new modular sofa LIV that can be adapted to our needs, Tylko has a shelving system that can be simply changed and expanded without any tools and the young start-up Floating Office presented a solution for small living: a desk that is literally floating. By lifting the desk to the ceiling with a smart solution, we free the space in our small urban dwellings. And this is just the beginning of potentially many more ‘floating’ solutions! Have a look at the highlights of the German Design Tour in this video.

‘Made in Germany’ is for sure a highlight on a design fair happening in Germany. But also the international design scene was present at this year’s fair. Labels like the Bosnian brand Zanat presented their beautiful designs, among them the new Mati chair by Sebastian Herkner. He introduced his new design personally as well as the Swedish designer Monica Förster, who has been collaborating with Zanat for quite a while.

Also some all-time favorites like Menu, String, By Lassen, Lignet Roset presented their news. I also saw Nanimarquina again (some might remember my Spanish design tour) and loved their new Silhouette rugs designed by Jaime Hayon. And what I love most: I also discovered new design labels from other countries like the Portuguese label Munna Design and Ginger & Jagger, the Austrian design label Wittmann or the Dutch label Studio Henk. Check those out, they were truly inspiring!

A final highlight was the design installation DAS HAUS made by the Spanish design team Mut Design. They presented an open house with Mediterranean flair, full of natural white hues and soft pastel hues, terracotta tones and some of my favorite Spanish design labels such as LZF Lamps, Gandia Blasco, Sancal and more.

Last but not last: I stopped at the stand of the German Design Association where they presented the winning photos of the #beingathome contest. It was great to see those interior shots again and also meet the people who photographed them. Ending a design fair visit with inspiring chats, drinks and good food is secretly always my highlight. See you next year, imm Cologne!
