My 6 Favorite (And Mostly Affordable) Fashion Accessories That I Wear All. The. Time.

emily henderson affordable fashion accessories 1

Due to my general laziness with fashion, accessories have always been an afterthought. But I realized that while I don’t have a big inventory, I wear the same types of accessories almost every day. They amp up my basic outfit, and are functional or they distract from say, bad hair. I’m not a big cocktail ring person and for work, I can’t be bothered with bracelets, but these six types of accessories are apparently my go-tos that I didn’t even realize I had.

Layered Necklaces

from left to right: i tried 3 “party” makeup looks | shopping my closet for fall & wearing some ethically made shoes i love | six fall sweaters i’m loving (+ how to wear them)

My friend Suzanne taught me how to do this – you buy a set of three then add in one more that is either chunkier or somehow visually different (like a locket or a fishbone chain). I basically just let her tell me what to buy and how to wear it, but now I add them to almost any outfit I wear.

1. Set of 2 Pendant Necklaces | 2. Sofia Chunky Chain Layer Necklace | 3. Ball & Medallion In Worn Gold Layer Necklace | 4. Mystic Layered Necklace | 5. Bria Delicate Layered Necklace | 6. Treasure Pendant Necklace Set

Rancher Hats

from left to right: 5 easy tips to bring a little “spring” into your january wardrobe | turns out my “uptown prairie” style is all over the internet | ripped & distressed jeans roundup + a genius shopping hack

This year I posed the question to myself – are we still wearing hats? And while I’m not as into them fashion-wise as I was 3 years ago the answer is YES, mostly because of function. They make a bad hair day look OK and provide shade. Of course, they add style, but I wear them more out of necessity (and lately I’ve been wearing a ton of graphic baseball hats).

  1. WYETH™ Wool River Rancher Hat | 2. Lack of Color Grove Rancher | 3. Janessa Leone Caden Hat | 4. Tall Flat Brim Felt Panama Hat | 5. WYETH™ Dylan Rancher Hat | 6. Cusco Rancher

Bandanas

from left to right: my new insanely comfortable “mom-friendly” weekend wardrobe | my favorite affordable spring dresses (all with pockets) | why i am suddenly dressing like a toddler (and what does brian think)

I started wearing neck scarves when Birdie was a baby because I couldn’t wear necklaces, and I just haven’t stopped. I feel like they’ve gone in and out of style, and aren’t for most people but I love how they dress up – or down – an outfit.

  1. Tungsten Glow Multi Bandana | 2. Paisley Bandana | 3. 3-Pack Bandanas | 4. Cotton Block Print Bandana | 5. Edge Detail Bandana | 6. Neckerchief Leopard Print Scarf

Leather Totes

from left to right: six fall sweaters i’m loving (+ how to wear them) | highlighting a brand we love (plus my thoughts on ethically made things)

I’m not a huge handbag person so I either carry larger indestructible ones that fit my laptop and likely about 95 hair ties mixed with loose almonds on the bottom OR belt bags when I want something smaller. I’ve been using that Parker Clay bag for almost 4 years and recently got that brown leather tote from Able and it is my current go-to. Both have easy to put on straps, some interior pockets and age so well (and are sustainable and high quality).

  1. Nimes Araoz Bag | 2. Eden Carryall| 3. Lori Tote | 4. The Day Market Tote | 5. The Zip-Top Medium Transport Tote | 6. Solome Tote

Belt Bags

from left to right: six fall sweaters i’m loving (+ how to wear them) | 4 coats 4 ways: how i am styling coats this winter (+ reviews)

When I want a smaller tote (for weekends and nights mostly) I opt for the statement belt bag, because they do feel a bit more young and fun than a cross-body. Clare V. makes some really good ones (all three of the ones I am wearing are Clare V.) but they are on the expensive side, so we rounded up some more affordable ones. You’ve seen me wear that red one a lot because I am obsessed with it and I like that the color adds an unexpected element to my outfits.

  1. Bree Belt Bag | 2. Monogram Vegan Leather Belt Bag | 3. Leather Purse Belt Bag | 4. Leather Belt Bag With Flap Pocket | 5. Emma Convertible Belt Bag | 6. Corrinne Snake Belt Bag

Patterned Socks

from left to right: shopping my closet for fall & wearing some ethically made shoes i love | 51 affordable spring dresses (& 1 awesome jumper i couldn’t resist) | why ehd loves a jumpsuit + our treid and true recommendations

I absolutely did not understand the love of patterned socks until this year and once I added them to my repertoire I started thinking about socks as part of my outfit. Socks!!! Shocking, I know. My team also loves them and “where did you get your socks from” is a phrase often uttered in the office. Come join our sock party.

  1. Stripe-Play Ankle Socks | 2. Striped 6pk Crew Socks | 3. Hansel from Basel™ Two-Pack Geo Shimmer Socks | 4. Lignes Crew Sock Set | 5. Hansel From Basel Horizon Shimmer Crew Socks | 6. Two-Pack Grid Trouser Socks

That’s all she wrote, folks. Now I am curious – what are your go-to everyday accessories?? Are there any new styles I should know about? Let me know in the comments. xx

Homeowners turn an old cupboard into a brilliant DIY home bar – cheers to that idea!

There are home transformations that deserve a round of applause, and then then are those that deserve a round of drinks to celebrate! And this ingenious DIY home bar idea is one of the latter!

The fabulous transformation popped up in our Ideal Home Room Clinic. Member Liz Smith shared with the group how to make a home bar out of an old cupboard!

More from our members: Grey spray-painted kitchen cabinets totally transform this family kitchen

The cupboard before transformation

Liz explains what the space is an existing extension, previously a granny annexe room. With the cupboard ‘ deep filled with toys and grannies slippers and dressing gown!’

After her eldest two children moved out the room was no longer needed, so they decided to move the granny annexe upstairs.

Telling Ideal Home, ’we found ourselves with yet another unused room. The obvious choice a home bar easy to get to the hot tub, without dripping through the dining room and kitchen.’

Yes that is correct, This room leads via French doors out onto the garden where is also a hot tub…this house is made for parties. Anyone else fancy moving in? We do!

‘We fitted the bar ourselves over a weekend, ‘Liz tells us. ‘The wood panels on the back were sooooo heavy to cut and lift into place!
The gorgeous distressed wood floor tiles, were part of the kitchen dining room makeover. They are called Shimmy timber from Tile Choice.’

A DIY home bar worth toasting…

Raise a glass to the job completed! Who else is off to empty the cupboard in prep?

The transformation was met with a cheer in the Facebook group…

‘Looks brilliant! Well done 👏🏻’ says one supportively. ‘Wow! Great job! Love it’ exclaims another.

Liz estimates the costs for her DIY home bar transformation at £1550, including all the extras. With the highest priced items being the drinks fridge from Amazon costing £300; wood-effect worktops and splashback costing £300 and cupboards from Howdens costing £150.

The couple furnished the finished bar in an eclectic style, to add even further character. Such as the quirky aeroplane shelf that takes centre stage and the statement pendant light made of wine glasses.

Why you should only clean your home once a week according to an IKEA tidy technician

If you can never seem to keep your home in order, the secret could lie in tidying you home only one day a week according to an IKEA tidy technician.

Related: Why you should never store things under your bed according to a declutter expert

In January IKEA in Australia announced they were hiring tidy technicians to declutter and organise Australian homes. Megan Dryden landed the dream role, along with nine other organisation experts.

IKEA tidy technician organisation tips

IKEA tidy technician 1

After attending a ‘tidy technician’ bootcamp with IKEA Megan is well versed in every IKEA storage solution. As well as brimming with her own tidying tips.

Speaking to Femail the tidy technician revealed her top tip for keeping her home in order. Surprisingly, it’s directly opposed to advice from other cleaning gurus.

Rather than spending 5 minutes every day tidying the house, Megan instead dedicates one day to a full tidy and clean. ‘We use Sunday for tidying the home, rather than organising small sections of each room every day,’ says Megan.

However, there are some tasks that Megan and her husband will do every evening. Before going to bed they will make sure all the dishes are away and lunches are ready to go for the next day.

‘It’s a really simple and great way to start the day on the right foot and start fresh,’ she says.

One of Megan’s other secrets to an organised home is to ditch anything in your home you don’t need.

‘Owning fewer items makes everything a lot easier to quickly tidy up, especially when company unexpectedly pops over or if you have regular family dinners,’ Megan told Daily Mail Australia. ‘I always try and encourage clients to set items to a designated area too so they can be found easily.’

The tidy technician roles are temporary, and part of the ‘Tidy by IKEA’ campaign. The aim is to help Australian homes destress and learn to make the most of the space in their home.

Three new dark kitchens that look designer but won't break the bank

GoodHome kitchens are B&Q’s first kitchen launch in over 10 years, and they’ve really spoilt us for choice; with 9 new designs in a mix of both modern country and contemporary fitted kitchens.

Related: Three new grey kitchens that are totally on trend and surprisingly affordable

However, with the rising trend for dark kitchens, it’s the three styles below that have really piqued our interest.

1. Artemisia – best for lovers of new traditional

Buy now: Artemisia in Midnight Blue, from £1,298 for 8 unit galley kitchen, B&Q

Smart Shaker-style, midnight blue and cup handles… what’s not to love about the Artemisia? We know this style and colourway has been the ‘go-to’ for a few years now, but it’s these classic traits that make it trend-defying and timeless.

The saturated matt finish means the blue will look the same in any light, so you’re guaranteed a uniform look. Pair it will marble-effect surfaces for a fresh combination. And if blue isn’t your thing, it’s also available in a moody, graphite grey.

2. Pasilla – best for a sleek statement

Buy now: Pasilla in matt carbon, From £1,648 for an 8-unit kitchen, B&Q

It was always the case that a contemporary kitchen meant glossy, but the cool matt surface on thin-profiled doors takes this to new design-led levels.

It’s available as smooth and handleless with a push mechanism, or go tone on tone with thin black Annatto handles. Why not embrace the darkness and team with a rich, enveloping wall colour and dark floors?

3. Stevia – best for busy kitchens

Buy now: Stevia in anthracite, from £1,048 for an 8 unit kitchen, B&Q

Gorgeously glossy, we think this versatile kitchen will slip comfortably into any space, from a large, open-plan area to a small, industrial style flat. The smooth surfaces are easy to wipe clean, making them perfect for both families and enthusiastic (AKA messy) chefs.

Anthracite grey is a modern twist on white, but we love the combination of the two. Pairing with white for top level units will stop small kitchens from feeling closed in, plus the reflective surfaces will bounce light around.

Related: 20 grey kitchen ideas that are both stylish and sophisticated

B&Q haven’t stopped there either. You can make any of the kitchens bespoke with a choice of handles, worktops, tiles, taps, sinks and more, with a visualizer tool to help cement your choice.

How to get rid of dog smells in the house

With the arrival of spring on our doorstep, thoughts turn to giving our homes the first spring clean of the year, and for many dog owners, that also means getting rid of any harbouring doggy smells from our furry, four-legged friends.

Keep your house looking and smelling gorgeous with more care and cleaning tips

With 9.9 million pet dog filled homes across the country, it’s fair to say we’re a nation of dog lovers, but not the whiffy smells they can sometimes bring into your home.

Handily, TastyBone, the dog chew specialists have created this simple guide to getting rid of unwanted smells.

How to get rid of dog smells in the house

1. Clean your dog’s bed regularly

Our pooches love their beds and while it’s important they maintain a familiar scent so they feel safe and cosy, giving their bed a vacuum once a week, and a wash every two weeks, will help keep unwanted smells under control.

Related: Are these the most stylish dog beds ever?

2. Keep floors sparkling clean

Death-of-the-mop

Be sure to sweep hard floors daily and wash them with a strong, pet-friendly cleaning solution and hot water on a regular basis, helping to combat odours and clean mucky paw prints.

Dog smells can also easily linger in carpet and rug fibres so vacuuming twice a week and steam cleaning once a month, will help bust dust, hair and unwanted odours.

3. Let the air in

Keeping internal doors open in your home so air can circulate, and opening up windows when the weather is warmer, will allow smells to disperse quicker and instead leave you with a fresh smelling home.

4. Cover up snoozing spots

Use blankets and throws on sofas and armchairs or anywhere else your furry friend might like to sit to protect fabrics and make it easier to keep on top of odours.

Wash them weekly and even pop a dryer sheet inside cushions and pillows to maintain the freshness.

5. Fill your home with fragrance

Living-room-makeover-with-dark-blue-walls,-pink-sofa-and-gold-accessories-5

Scented candles and reed diffusers and both great ways to fill your home with pleasant fragrances, to mask any whiffy smells.

Best placed in corridors, bathrooms and living rooms, be careful to keep them well out of reach from your prized pet and keep a close eye on them while the candle is lit.

6. Give your buddy a bath

Before giving your dog a wash, its important to ensure you’re clued up on their breed, as some require specialist grooming and the nature of some coats will need more regular washing.

Related: How to clean a bathroom – the easy way to get your bath, loo, shower and sink sparkling

If you’re unsure, check with your vet, but generally an occasional bath will help with stinky smells and leave them with that ‘just washed’ glow.

Experts reveal how to save money on heating bills as the cold weather spell continues

It might almost be March, but the frosty weather shows no signs of letting up and neither do our hefty heating bills. Luckily we have a few expert tips to help save money on heating and keep you warm and cosy at home this weekend.

Related: This is the perfect temperature to set your heating at and keep EVERYONE happy

When it comes to keeping our homes warm, in the UK we’re not the best at it. In fact, according to a new study by tado°, an intelligent home climate management company, our homes are losing heat a lot faster than our European neighbours.

save money on heating 2

The study found that a UK home looses heat up to three times as fast as a house in Germany. This sadly means our heating systems are having to work a lot harder.

However, remoulding our homes to stop them loosing as much heat is a tall order, especially when summer is just around the corner. Instead, these simple tips from the experts at BestHeating should help ward off the winter chill and a hefty heating bill.

How to save money on heating bills

1.Bleed your radiators

If your radiators aren’t heating up properly they probably need to be bled. It’s a quick and easy job that will make your radiator work more efficiently, and help save money!

2. Don’t block radiator

Anything placed over a radiator will block the flow of air. That means the boiler will just have to work harder, costing even more money.

If you have a sofa or armchair pushed up against it, move it!

3. Close your curtains

save money on heating 3

A lot of heat can be lost through windows and walls. Stop the great heat escape by closing your curtains and tucking them behind your radiator in the evenings.

4. Invest in a rug

Rugs aren’t just an accessory to jazz up the living room. During the colder months, they add an extra layer of insulation to your flooring. Keeping the room warmer at no extra cost.

5. Draught-proof doors and windows

It might seem old fashioned to use a draft excluder at the foot of your door, but trust us they work. Filling in any gaps around doors and windows will all help to save money on your heating bill in the long term.

6. Clean your radiators

save money on heating 1

If you notice cold spots at the bottom of your radiator when the heating is on full blast it could mean you’ve got a build-up of sludge. This is a sign that your radiators need a good clean to get the hot water circulating properly again.

7. Check your loft insulation

A quarter of a home’s heat is lost through poorly insulated roof spaces. Check your roof insulation has a depth of between 250 and 270 mm, to make sure you aren’t loosing all that precious heat out of the roof.

8. Only turn the heat on when you need it

BestHeating’s John Lawless advises only putting the heating on for a couple of hours a day, rather than leaving it on low all day.

‘Sure, your boiler will have to work a little harder to heat up a cold home when you first switch it on. But having it on constantly will use more energy than just switching it on when you need it,’ he says.’

Will you be trying out any of these tips?

Restaurant Review: Folie

There’s an exclusive feel to Folie, the glitzy London first from restauranteur Guillaume Depoix. This is felt from the minute you arrive: a velvet curtain protects the restaurant’s entrance on Golden Square, the spot where Soho meets Mayfair. Since opening late last year it’s welcomed a host of glamorous names, and Victoria Beckham recently hailed it as one of her favourite places to dine out in Europe.

Rumour has it the restaurant cost a whopping £5 million to produce – no surprise, when you see the ultra-chic interiors, which come courtesy of Studio KO, the Parisian agency behind Chiltern Firehouse. The design is intended to evoke the glamour of the French Riviera in the 1970s: think curved brown banquettes, terrazzo flooring, shiny mirrored tables and quirky bespoke lighting.

Steven Joyce

Despite the smart surroundings, there’s a relaxed feel to Folie. It’s the kind of place you could easily spend a while – on a recent trip there, a friend and I whiled away a whole Saturday afternoon.

The Mediterranean-inspired menu is fittingly stylish, led by Executive Head Chef Christophe Marleix, whose sparkling CV includes The Dorchester, Annabel’s and Plaza Athénée in Paris. Food runs from breakfast through to dinner – we went for a late, leisurely brunch, which ended up being a three-course affair.

Folie

Yann Deret

Begin by channelling the restaurant’s holiday vibes with an aperitif at the glistening gold bar. You can’t go wrong with a Bellini, mixed here with Crémant, white peaches and raspberries, best enjoyed with a couple of bits from the Épicerie menu: chickpea panisse perhaps (fries made from chickpeas) or some Italian charcuterie.

Whatever time you go, start with a few light sharing plates. The burratina is a highlight, served with lentils and peppered with crunchy pomegranate seeds – unusual, but it works. This is a common theme here: classic dishes spruced up with luxurious ingredients. The scrambled eggs, for instance, are cooked with sea urchins, and even the avo-on-toast has been given a fancy glow up.

Steven Joyce

Mains are equally enticing. Many of these, too, are designed to be shared: there’s a crowd-pleasing confit shoulder of lamb, or a lovely Dover sole dish. The salads shouldn’t be overlooked, either – the creative beetroot, clementine and chickpea combination is a winner. Finally, end your meal on a high with the Folie ‘chichi’, a jam-filled doughnut with coconut, mango and passion fruit sorbet.

When you eventually manage to make the leap back into cold London town, you’ll leave dreaming of long lunches on the beach, longing to book a trip to sunnier climes.
