Film4 Summer Screen

August 8 – 21

For 14 evenings in August, Somerset House will project film favourites at the Edmond J. Safra Fountain Court. Grab grub at Jimmy Garcia’s BBQ Club before settling in for a open-air cinematic experienced best enjoyed on a barmy summer evening. Discover the full film schedule here.

Kaleidoscope: Immigration and Modern Britain

June 12 – September 8

There has never been a better, more appropriate and necessary time to gain insight and understanding of immigration. This photography exhibiton explores identity and immigration in modern day Britain. Features works by 10 different photographers either born or based in Britain with families from Russia, Jamaica, Hong Kong, India and elsewhere.

Get Up, Stand Up Now

June 12 – September 15

This exhibition looks at and showcases the past 50 years of Black creativity in Britain and further afield, too. Over 110 artists come together to make this exhibition exploring Black influence and experiences. “The exhibition is a total celebration of everything that’s happened before us… So it really is of the upmost importance for us to have this platform to be able to show literally 10% of what we’re really about.” Normski, British Rapper. Hennessy: For The Culture

June 12 – September 15

Celebrating one of music’s most unique genres, Grime, Hennessy: For The Culture is a curation of photographs and artist interviews telling the story of Grime; where it came from, how it was inspired to come to be. The exhibition will also explore how the genre is evolving and how it is completely and intimately linked with Black music creativity and the wealth of the industry, in the UK. Coinciding with the exhibition is Hennessy Lates, the next being on Friday 16th August, 7pm – 11pm. The free gig will feature performances by the eight-piece jazz and Afrobeat band Kokoroko, multi-instrumentalist CKTRL, DJ AMZ and DJ Tej Adeleye.

Gallery 31: BONDS

September 6 – December 31

Somerset House Studios’ permanent exhibition space opens this September with BONDS, its first season. Each season will have a different theme and feature art made inside the building by artists in Somerset House’s year-round residency programme. The season opens with Sihlangene Emoyeni, a film by Johannesburg’s queer art collective, exploring ‘memory and the colonised body’.

Wysing Polyphonic x Somerset House Studios

September 7

The 10th annual music festival Wysing Polyphonic will this year be curated by Somerset House Studios. The line-up includes Beatrice Dillon x TTB, Jesse Darling, Loraine James, Flora Yin-Wong, Amra, Erica Scourti, Brood Ma, Valentina Magaletti and many more.

Water Life by Aida Muluneh

September 24 – October 20

Commissioned by WaterAid, photographer Aida Muluneh presents this vibrant exhibition exploring themes of gender and representation, and social justice through 12 huge images shot in Ethiopia.

Mary Sibande: I Came Apart at the Seams

October 3 – January 5 (2020)

Mary Sibande is one of South Africa’s most well-known, celebrated artists. This exhibition will feature some of her new works, including photography and sculptures, exploring the ‘power of imagination and constructive anger in shaping identities and personal narratives in a post-colonial world’.
