Best Alternative Christmas Dinners in London

While a traditional turkey roast is synonymous with Christmas in the UK, not all countries celebrate this way. And around London, there are an abundance of restaurants proving other foods can be festive too,  from seafood platters to Indian feasts. We bring you our pick of the best alternative Christmas menus the capital has to offer…

Daisy Green Collection

Daisy Green Collection

Fancy something a bit lighter this Christmas? Head to one of The Daisy Green Collection branches for an Aussie-inspired twist on the classic roast. Starters include a tuna tataki dish alongside their famous halloumi fries, followed by a free-range turkey main served with winter greens, crispy crushed potatoes and roasted root vegetables – with gluten-free options available. Other dishes include a grilled salmon dish with Jerusalem artichoke crisp, a nut roast, and sirloin steak with green peppercorn sauce. Forget about healthy eating for dessert though – the sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch caramel sauce is a must. £35pp. daisygreenfood.com

SUSHISAMBA

SUSHISAMBA

As if it wasn’t Instagrammable enough already, SUSHISAMBA London Heron Tower has transformed into a magical rainforest for the festive season, featuring 500 LED lights which change colour every 30 seconds. It’s part of a collaboration with Cool Earth, a charity dedicated to helping halt rainforest deforestation in the Amazon. Alongside the twinkling installation guests can enjoy dishes from a specially created menu titled SAMBAZONIA. Worlds away from your average Christmas dinner, the feast includes crispy wagyu taquitos, shrimp tempura, black cod with sweetcorn and polenta, and a selection of sushi dishes including miso-cured tuna and soy-marinated salmon. Gunpowder

Gunpowder

Spice up your Christmas at Gunpowder in Tower Bridge, the second branch of the family-run Indian restaurant. Festive menus here are designed to be shared, with a mix of Gunpowder classics – Maa’s Kashmiri Lamb Chops, Karwari Soft Shell Crab – and celebratory specials, such as chargrilled tandoori chicken, and duck leg with Andhra Style Tomato Sambal & Parsnips. If you’re after something a bit more festive, go for the Christmas special: a pickled and roasted red leg partridge stuffed with spicy pork sausage and apricots – made all the better with beautiful riverside views. From £45pp. gunpowderlondon.com

Wright Brothers

Wright Brothers

Swap sprouts for seafood at oyster specialists Wright Brothers. Sharing-style festive menus are available across their Soho, Spitalfields and Battersea branches, featuring starters including scallop gratin and beef carpaccio followed by a choice of halibut, venison, fish pie or truffled mushroom gnocchi. Dessert takes a more traditional stance, with options such as a Christmas pudding ice cream with sherry, alongside stilton cheese, crackers and mini mince pies. Fed up of smoked salmon blinis? Their South Kensington branch offers a selection of alternative festive canape bites, including pork and crab scotch eggs, halibut ceviche, and wild mushroom arancini – perfect for standing celebrations. From £65pp. wrightbrothers.co.uk

Yeni

Yeni

You won’t be served turkey at Beak Street’s Yeni, but you will get food from the country Turkey. Christmas menus here range from tasting to sharing to lunch, with dishes including Galician octopus with yoghurt aioli bottarga and bulghar crackers, slow roasted beef ribs, and Yeni’s signature dumplings, filled with aubergine and chanterelle mushroom or beef. London Shell Co. and The Grand Duchess

London Shell Co.

Nic Crilly Hargrave

Push the boat out and opt for a cruising Christmas dinner aboard floating seafood restaurant London Shell Co., which is offering a five-course dining experience along Regent’s Canal. Tuck into dishes like Dorset oysters and brown butter poached sole before a fish-focused twist on the traditional roast: Cornish cod with roast potatoes, glazed carrots and sprouts. Alternatively stay static on sister restaurant The Grand Duchess, where guests can enjoy a festive feasting menu on their private banqueting table, which seats up to ten diners – ideal for a get together with friends, family or colleagues. £50pp at London Shell Co., £60pp at The Grand Duchess. londonshellco.com

Ella Canta

Ella Canta

Mexico is one of the world’s largest producers of gold, and the precious metal is woven into the country’s rich history. Chef Martha Ortiz celebrates this in her new six-course menu, Into the Gold, available at Ella Canta throughout December. The selection of artfully presented dishes includes a sea bass ceviche with kumquat, guinea fowl with white mole, and a pineapple and mango sorbet laced with gold. This is to be enjoyed alongside tipples from the special cocktail menu, designed to showcase the sweet and aromatic notes of the Mexican cocktail scene. £70pp. 12-21 December 2019. ellacanta.com

Kricket

Kricket

Spice up your Christmas at Kricket, which offers an Indian twist on the classic roast. Begin with juicy venison kebabs before tucking into the main event: goose vindaloo, with all the trimmings – which come here in the form of pork and sage parathas, tandoori cabbage with chestnut and a Brussel sprout Thoran. For dessert, swap Christmas pudding for Malai Kulfi, an Indian ice cream served with steeped fruit. Christmas group set menu £40pp. kricket.co.uk

Arros QD

Arros QD

Kalen

Michelin-starred chef Quique Dacosta traditionally eats paella for Christmas with his family in Valencia – and you can too, at his London restaurant Arros QD. Placed in the middle of the table, paella is the perfect sharing dish, with festive fillings including rabbit, chicken, garrafo bean and rosemary; or Canadian lobster and cuttlefish. Group dining menus from £70pp. arrosqd.com

Belmond British Pullman

Belmond

Fancy something a bit different? Step back in time to the glamorous 1920s when you board this iconic vintage train. A fine dining experience awaits in your beautiful wood-panelled carriage, resplendent with art deco designs. Their Christmas offering is a five-course affair, served as the beautiful landscape passes by before returning to London Victoria, head full of wonderful memories (and hunger a distant memory). belmond.com

Rüya London

With its lavish décor and Mayfair postcode, Rüya was made for special occasions. Inspired by second generation restaurateur Umut Özkanca’s Istanbul heritage, Rüya offers an array of dishes from the various Anatolian regions, stretching from the Mediterranean to the Black Sea. Swap roast turkey for Shish Tavuk: yoghurt and chilli marinated grilled turkey; alongside baked seabass, barley risotto with pulled lamb, and cheese pide with slow cooked organic egg. You won’t find any traditional Christmas pudding here, but the hazelnut baklava – served with whipped kaymak and caramelized milk sorbet – will soften the blow.  ruyalondon.com
