10 Things to Do in London This Week

What’s on in London this week? From the hottest show openings, latest art exhibitions, restaurants to book and tickets to buy now, here’s your culture guide to the week ahead…

What’s On In London This Week? 6 – 12 January

1. Join the Veganuary movement and trial delicious vegan cuisine with JAE at Hovarda

Hovarda

If you’re taking part in Veganuary this month – well done! – you’re in for a treat. Hovarda, the West End restaurant typically serving up an eclectic mix of Greek mezze, seafood and Turkish-inspired dishes, is turning vegan from the 6th to the 31st, with the help of renowned vegetarian chef and My Million Pound Menu champion, Jay Morjaria. He will be cooking up a range of inviting sharing plates using seasonal ingredients; guests can expect the likes of delicious coal roasted leeks with kimchi romesco, roast cauliflower with a vegan XO sauce, a Korean pancake-style brussel sprout pajeon, and a delectable mochi doughnut with cinnamon sugar, pear compote and almond cream – by Daniella Saunders. Until 31 January; book via horvada.london

2. Catch the last of London’s open ice rinks and skate without the crowds

Skate at Somerset House

The sparkly festival season may be over, but don’t let the January gloom set in yet: some of London’s most iconic ice rinks – including Somerset House and the National History Museum – are still open for (skating) business. Check opening hours to your favourite outdoor rinks with C&TH’s ultimate London skating guide. Until 12 January

3. Start 2020 on a positive note at Carousel’s uplifting pop-up: four days of talks, Q&As and workshops focused around all-things wellness

Carousel

Whether you’re wondering how to stay healthy throughout the winter or looking for tips for getting involved with Veganuary, all the talks taking place at pop-up will offer handy life hacks on how to shake that post-Christmas slump. There’s meditation with Julian Lavender of the London Meditation Centre, and a Fit Flow Yoga Class, or you can simply sit back and relax as IGPP qualified Isabel Fernandez gives you a chair massage. There’s also a takeover from Hackney’s Refinery Studio, a sound bath with Michelle Cade from Mind Like Water, a Q&A with gastrointestinal surgeon and author Dr Andrew Jenkinson, and a breathwork class followed by a discussion on how we can be prone to treating ourselves without compassion or respect – By Ellie Smith. 8 – 11 January, Carousel Seven Dials, 9-11 Short’s Gardens, London WC2H 9AT; tickets via carouselspaces.com

4. Your antidote to January blues: comedian Chris Redd at Soho Theatre

Chris Redd

Emmy-nominated, Chicago-born stand-up comic, actor, writer and rapper Chris Redd is bringing what’s bound to be another raucous week to London. The SNL regular – catch his hilarious Kanye impression – and recent roaster of Alec Baldwin on Comedy Central returns to Soho Theatre after his critically acclaimed 2019 debut at the venue. 6 – 11 January, sohotheatre.com

5. Get your ‘new year new me’ sweat on with a high intensity (but seriously fun) spin class in the city

Core Collective

Did overindulgence at Christmas lead to some serious fitness goals in 2020? It’s time to get spinning: the classic high-intensity studio workout is one of the most effective for toning and burning fat, and is also easy on the joints. Whether its competition or camaraderie with your sweat-dripping neighbours you’re after, check out the C&TH guide for a stylish spin session with music that’s sure to motivate even the laziest cyclers.

6. In with the old, out with the new; clear out all your old clobber and sustainably swap your pre-loved garments with Swish & Style at Round Chapel, Clapton

Clear-outs aren’t just for spring, especially now that almost a third of the average Brit’s wardrobe hasn’t been worn in the past year. For every item brought to a Swish & Style event (you can take up to 15), you receive a token that can be exchanged by another garment from someone else. It’s shopping at its most sustainable (not to mention free) – so step away from those tempting January sales. 11 January, Round Chapel, 1D Glenarm Road, London, E5 0LY; register via eventbrite.co.uk

7. Visit Concealed Histories at the V&A, the first UK exhibition to explore the Gilbert Collection in the context of its ‘troubling history’

Gilbert Collection

Comprising about 1,000 decorative arts items, the Gilbert Collection is one of the world’s most important of its kind. However, a troubling history lies behind much of the delicate gold, silver and decorative mosaic pieces – the collection’s founders, Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert, were aware of Nazi crimes (being children of Jewish immigrants themselves), but did not question the provenance of the pieces, which were taken from Jewish collectors in Germany and Nazi-occupied Europe. Concealed Histories: Uncovering the Story of Nazi Looting aims to shed light on the histories and past owners of the precious pieces, like the snuff box belonging to Maximilian von Goldschmidt-Rothschild, a wealthy Jewish banker forced to sell his entire art collection. 5 December 2019 – 10 January 2021; vam.ac.uk

8. Dry Jan doesn’t have to be dull. Head to one of these C&TH recommended bars for your booze-free fix

Cahoots

A buzzy atmosphere, swanky surroundings and zero chances of the Fear the next morning – these days, it’s more than possible to have a good social life while doing Dry January. From Soho to Shoreditch, C&TH has rounded up some of the best bars in London (including stylish speakeasy Cahoots, pictured) serving killer non-alcoholic cocktails, for a night out without the hangover – or the FOMO. 9. Take to the ice at Alexandra Palace for a Dirty Dancing vs Grease skating spectacular with Club De Fromage on Ice

Lace up your skates and twirl to the tunes of two of the best musical films ever at the ice-rink edition of the legendary festival pop night. Sing along to You’re The One That I Want, Hungry Eyes, Summer Nights and more, then grab a cocktail from the bar in between laps. 11 January; alexandrapalace.com

10. Sam Mendes’ latest film is one to watch. Catch 1917 at Hampstead’s Everyman Cinema, out on the 10th

Having garnered rave reviews and won the Best Picture: Drama Golden Globe this weekend, this WWI epic from director Sam Mendes is the this month’s must-see. Shot in one continuous take by celebrated cinematographer Roger Deakins, it tells the story of two young British soldiers venturing into enemy territory in a race against time, capturing the horror and brutality of war with all of the skill and none of the cliches. From 10 January; everymancinema.com
