5 Podcasts to Get you Through the Winter Commute

The antidote to the much-feared winter commute, podcasts offer instant entertainment for when you’re endlessly on-the-go. Suddenly the queues for the tube, that delayed District line train and the wintry weather don’t seem so bad when you’re too busy laughing, crying or gasping at a podcast. From Happy Place to The High Low, we’ve rounded up five of the best shows to listen to whether on a train, plane, bus – or bath? Anywhere really…

The High Low

This weekly podcast needs no introduction. Hosted by the warm and witty journalistic duo Dolly Alderton and Pandora Sykes, The High Low offers engrossing insight into both politics and pop-culture, and everything else in-between (namely Dolly’s long-standing fascination with Rod Stewart). Whether you want the low down on ‘Wagatha Christie’ or a deeper understanding of Alabama’s abortion ban, you’ll find all things relevant (and less so) discussed in this must-listen-to podcast. play.acast.com

Table Manners

As if we couldn’t love singer Jessie Ware anymore, then came her fabulous mum Lenny. These two are a mother-daughter match made in podcast heaven, serving up A-list guests hearty meals from their own homes on their hilarious show Table Manners. From Ed Sheeran to Charlotte Tilbury, Nigella Lawson and Sadiq Khan, there isn’t a guest that this diamond duo can’t cater to. Expect raucous laughter, some serious home cooking ‘inspo’ and a few celebrity secret reveals. play.acast.com

A comedy podcast sensation, My Dad Wrote a Porno has stolen the hearts (and ears) of listeners everywhere, boasting more than 200 million downloads. The show is based on a simple premise; Jamie Morton reads his dad’s erotic novels aloud – with the help of friends Radio 1 presenter Alice Levine and digital executive James Cooper – leading to some side-splitting commentary and comical cliff hangers. Whatever will the salacious Belinda do next? mydadwroteaporno.com

Happy Place

Having experienced her own challenges with mental health, Fearne Cotton is the ideal presenter to host a podcast about finding happiness. Speaking to a number of inspirational guests such as Elizabeth Gilbert, Emma Willis and Hillary Clinton, Fearne explores how to deal with the highs and lows life brings and how we can each discover our ‘happy place’. officialfearnecotton.com

House Guest Podcast

Welcome to the House Guest podcast, where C&TH Interiors Editor @carolewannett chats with experts from the world of interior design and decoration, the people behind the houses and hotels you see in glossy magazines like ours. Some of the names will be familiar, and others may be less so, but we’re sure you’ll recognise the hotels and restaurants they’ve designed. And if you’re in the middle of your own building project or restyle, we hope you’ll pick up some tips. Enjoy! This week’s House Guest podcast was recorded at @highclere_castle – home to the 8th Earl and Countess of Carnarvon. If you are a fan of Downton Abbey, you will know the house very well, and away from the fictional world of Julian Fellowes, Highclere is very much a family home. Lady Carnarvon kindly welcomed Country & Town House magazine inside for a peek at life without the tv cameras. She revamps and renovates the house, where and when necessary, by herself (with the occasional helping hand). A huge task, as along with the daily visitors and running of the cafe, she is launching a Highclere gin, running events, writing books – new one due out soon – doing yoga each morning in the garden and cycling around checking all is well in the gardens, followed by a gaggle of household dogs. The Downton movie has just been filmed at Highclere. Link in bio ☝🏻

We couldn’t curate a podcast roundup without including our very own. Hosted by Country & Town House’s interiors editor Carole Annett, the House Guest Podcast introduces listeners to the crème de la crème of interior design, from Sophie Paterson to the legendary Alidad. Delight in interiors inspiration, compelling success stories and an abundance of restaurants, houses and hotels you might just have walked into yourself… The House Guest Podcast
