If you follow me on Instagram or on my blog, you might have noticed that I’m a coffee fan. I try to not be dependent on caffeine (though sometimes this can be a little challenging) and to cherish my cups for a break during my workday rather than a quick cup with my breakfast or on the way to a meeting. I’m having my coffee breaks away from my desk and take the time to write down plans and to-do lists. It’s such a nice moment in my day, where I try to reflect and get away from the tasks at hand.
As you might have seen on Instagram, I recently got the Melitta Amano Pour Over coffee maker at home and I just love the slow brewing process, which makes my coffee ritual even more special. The coffee maker looks really nice with the matt black and gold combination and feels so nice to touch as well.
I think most of you know Melitta from their coffee filters, right? That’s at least how I have known the brand since childhood. Apparently back in 1908, a woman named Melitta Bentz was bothered by the bitter taste of her coffee. She punched holes in a tin can, lined it with her son’s school blotting paper and this is how the first coffee filter came to life. Later on, a matching porcelain filter device was brought to the market as well and they have been sold together for many years worldwide. In recent years though, Pour Over coffee gained new momentum with baristas all over the world using this year-old method to brew their coffee back to the original manual method, which stands out in its simplicity. The Melitta Momentum series was designed to enjoy this slow ritual of pouring the water and relishing the process.
I have tried the Melitta AMANO in my own home, as you can see in the pictures. It’s a manual Pour Over coffee maker with two outlets controlled by a knob for a perfect extraction. You can open and close the filter outlets with the knob on the filter. This allows you to keep the outlets closed to let the full aroma unfold in the first 10-20 seconds and to dampen the coffee bed for the extraction process to follow. The glass jug has a very clean and simple shape which is great for serving, both for yourself and for brunch when you have visitors over.
As you might have seen in my stories on Instagram a while back, I had the opportunity to visit the Melitta Momentum stand at the Ambiente fair in Frankfurt. A barista at the stand showed me how to brew the perfect cup of coffee with my Melitta AMANO, which I have been trying out at home as well. After dampening the coffee bed, he opened the outlets and then proceeded to pour the remaining water slowly, at the same speed as the water comes out of the outlets. I was definitely doing this too quick before and improved upon this. Other than enjoying so many cups of coffee there, I also got to try out the other product in the Melitta Momentum line: Melitta EPOS, an electric Pour Over system with an integrated grinder. While you are in control of the pouring yourself with the Melitta AMANO, the Melitta EPOS takes care of this for you as well. It has a rotating water spout, that moves at exactly the perfect speed (just like the barista did, and like I’m trying to do at home). Personally, I love the manual process and enjoy taking time to do this, it makes my coffee break even more conscious, but if you want a more automated process and have space on your kitchen countertop, the Melitta EPOS might be more for you. Both products are available in matt black with golden or silver elements and even more colours were presented at the fair, which we will see on their website at the end of this year. I love the black version but thought the dark teal colour looked really nice as well, it’s just so different and uncommon for a coffee maker, yet it fits so well with the golden side posts.
This blogpost was written in collaboration with Melitta Momentum however, all opinions are my own of course. If you would like to know more about the Melitta Momentum range, I encourage you to visit their website.
