How To Style Your Home Like A Parisian

With news that a second season of Emily in Paris is on its way, many are gearing up to enjoy a second dose of french sartorial prowess from the costume wardrobe. But we’re also just as excited about getting a second look at the inside the playful and colourfully-captivating Parisian interiors depicted in the show. If you loved them as much as we did: a Parisian-style home refresh is the perfect lockdown project to re-introduce a touch of romantic escapism back into life. Reject anything that feels like too much effort: the trick here is to stay relaxed and easygoing with artfully ruffled sheets, bold prints and plenty of wicker furniture. Add mismatched door handles, layers of linen, and an irresistible, zesty scent for the full effect.

1. Go second hand

Laid back, laissez-faire Parisian style is best achieved with a mix of old and new pieces, colour layered against monochrome, and plenty of interest from contrasting textures – exemplified by this project by French architects Humbert & Poyet in South Pigalle, Paris. The designers blended 50s brass and opaline hanging lamps from Italy with custom made furniture pieces, Pierre Frey wallpaper and Didier Cabuy floors. To get the look yourself (and for unique pieces you won’t be seeing on every Instagram feed in two months from now) hunt down furniture and art second-hand, or upcycle pieces you already have with a lick of paint. 2. Distressed is best

Don’t be afraid of a little of rough-and-readiness when it comes to the texture of walls, floorboards and furniture treatments. We love these amber-yellow walls in this scheme, designed by Blyth Collinson Interiors. Although this project is in an Oxfordshire farmhouse (rather than Provençal), the water-stained paint lend a lustrous glow to beautiful antique pieces. 3. Keep colours and decorations understated

Another project by Humbert & Poyet, this bedroom was designed for an apartment in the 9th arrondissement of Saint-Georges. While it could be tempting to go all-out Versailles with the existing features, Humbert & Poyet have perfectly offset and toned down feminine blush hues and original cornicing with more relaxed linen textures, an artful jumble of books and space-enhancing mirrored cabinets. humbertpoyet.com

4. Choose art and furniture carefully

5. Go Tonal

Feeling more daring? Time to break out the toile. A shortcut to create statement, impact and focal points is by basing a colour scheme around a single shade. Take a leaf out of Blyth Collinson’s book here, by layering patterns, shapes and trimmings within the same shade range.
