Whilst quarantined or self-isolating, now is the time to get creative. But if you’re torn between traditional painting, pottery and paper crafts, let us give you a little artistic inspiration. We bring you the biggest crafting trends for 2020.
Top Crafts Trends for 2020
Tie-Dye
Tie-dye is back just in time for summer – and we’re here for it. The perfect lockdown activity, give your clothes an overhaul (or get hold of some second hand garments to transform) and enhance your lockdown wardrobe. LA designer Raquel Allegra shares her top tips for tie-dye with us here. We’re ‘dieing’ to give it a try.
Stained Glass Crafts
Stained glass making has really taken off this year, with a 127 per cent increase in searches for stained glass tools and supplies on Etsy, according to Martha Stewart. Bright, colourful and often showcasing some kind of narrative, artists have been creating decorative stained glass for centuries, so it’s not hard to find inspiration.
Flower Arranging
It’s a craft that never appears to go out of fashion. Instead of splashing out on big-budget bouquets, learn to create beautiful floral arrangements of your own. Look to Frida Khalo and Azuma Makoto’s iced flowers for inspiration.
Mindful Crafts
An effective antidote to the solitariness of self-isolation, the mindful crafts concept continues to grow. From calligraphy to colouring in (not just for kids, you know), exercising your creativity has a multitude of health benefits from alleviating stress to boosting brain productivity, not to mention switching off from the rest of the world.
Life Drawing
In a world infiltrated by Photoshop and unrealistic body expectations, life drawing has become an antidote to the superficial. Classes are emerging across the country, from the more traditional to the outlandish – even burlesque and cabaret life drawing is a thing. Once restrictions have lifted, join artist Lily Holder’s monthly classes at Chelsea’s No 11, Pimlico Road for music, drinks and drawing. darwinandwallace.co.uk
Patchwork & Quilting
From dedicated retreats to this year’s Festival of Quilts (postponed until 29 July), patchwork and quilting are firmly back in fashion. Benefits from the hobby include reduced stress and enhanced hand-eye coordination.
