Virtual Festivals To Tune Into

With all large-scale events banned until further notice, festival season is going to look a little different this year. We sadly won’t be enjoying the vibrant atmosphere of our favourite summer fiestas – but we can still have a taste of the action by tuning into one of the virtual festivals taking place. Read on for some of the best, spanning the worlds of music, food, literature and theatre.  

Henley Festival

Will Young, Beverley Knight and Rory Bremner are all set to perform at Henley’s digital concert, taking place on what would have been the final day of the much-loved glamorous festival. The two-hour evening event will be streamed live from the Hurley House Hotel, with all ticket sales helping allow the not-for-profit festival to continue in 2021.

Tomorrowland Around The World

Belgian electronic dance festival Tomorrowland is set to take the virtual events world to new heights with its online extravaganza, taking place this July. The festival will be presented on a new digital platform that invites festival-goers to enter through a virtual 3D map; once inside they’ll be met with live event simulations, fairytale-like stage designs and of course a top music line-up, featuring the likes of Afrojack, Robin Schulz and Fedde Le Grand.

Cockpit Festival of Making

Over the past few months crafts have come under the spotlight, with more and more of us turning to hands-on hobbies to unleash our creativity and curb lockdown boredom. This is being celebrated at Cockpit Arts’ first Festival of Making, featuring 65 events with over 80 makers – from ceramicists to leatherworkers, jewellers to printmakers. There’ll be discussions on topics such as wellbeing, creativity, unconventional career journeys and more, alongside workshops, live demonstrations and behind-the-scenes studio tours. Nine makers will also be taking on The Big Make challenge, which involves creating a complete object from start to finish over the course of the festival weekend.

Happy Place Virtual Festival

Gary Barlow, Clara Amfo, Craig David and Reggie Yates are just a few of the names lined up for Fearne Cotton’s virtual festival, which kicks off on 12 June and runs for a whole month. Themed around wellbeing and inspired by Fearne’s chart-topping podcast, the free festival will be hosted by inspirational figures across the worlds of TV, radio, music, sport and wellness. From music to meditation to storytelling to craft workshops, everything is designed to promote serenity, calm and escapism during these unsettling times. All content is free, though there are opportunities to make donations too, with all money raised going towards Mind, The Prince’s Trust, CoppaFeel and NHS Charities Together.

WOW Global 24

The WOW Foundation has announced it will be hosting the first ever worldwide online festival focused on women and girls, curated by teams from all over the globe including America, Pakistan, Nigeria and the UK. Entitled WOW Global 24, the festival will hear from activitsts, thinkers, artists and educators on both the local and international issues women face today, with an overarching theme of: ‘Women and Girls in a Time of Crisis’.

Carnaby Together

Cook with Netflix star Asma Khan, discover a new skincare routine with Pixi, workout with Heartcore and much more at Carnaby Together, a month of sustainable and charitable initiatives from the Carnaby community. The virtual events taking place span the worlds of fashion, food, beauty and fitness, with a whole host of Q&As, Instagram tutorials and cook-along sessions to tune into. Fred Perry will champion its ongoing collaboration with the Amy Winehouse Foundation through a Q&A with one of the charity’s founders, Jane Whitehouse, while founder of MOSCOT, Dr Harvey Moscot, will be giving advice on how to maintain eye health while working from home. There will be opportunities to win prizes throughout the month too, including a box of vegetables from Detox Kitchen, and pizza making kits from Pizza Pilgrims.

My VLF

Free global virtual literary festival venue My VLF was launched in April 2019, well before coronavirus came into our lives. It was born out of a love of books, and the desire to connect readers and authors without the need to travel or spend money attending a literary event. Now, of course, it’s more relevant than ever. Events take place frequently throughout the year: June is all about the Historical Book Festival, with a line-up including Kate Mosse, Ellen Alpsten and Victoria Hislop.
