Of Charlie and Edmund Inkin’s collection of effortlessly laid-back places to stay, this has the best location: overlooking the sea in the enchanting fishing village of Mousehole, noted for its artists, Christmas illuminations and invention of stargazy pie. The hotel was recently named Seaside Hotel of the Year 2020 in the Good Hotel Guide, and if you go there you’ll quickly see why. A hotel since Victorian times, the 14 attractive sea-facing bedrooms have superb beds, Roberts radios, Bramley products, auction room finds and striped curtains.
Downstairs, in the open-plan, wood-floored bar/dining room, you’ll tuck in to head chef Matt Smith’s superb dishes, perhaps fish stew with fennel, new potatoes, sea vegetables and aioli, or milk braised pork belly with Cornish earlies, choucroute, kohlrabi and mustard sauce. Making the most of the view through picture windows, the sun-filled sitting area, embellished with striped armchairs and handsome sofas, runs the length of the ground floor. Lazing there, looking through the palm trees to the shining sea, you’ll keep delaying your departure by another hour. It’s that sort of place.

One of the things that makes Britain great is the Minack Theatre. The plan to build a theatre into the side of the rocks 80 years ago has delivered a spectacular backdrop for plays.

Take your breakfast coffee and a pain au chocolat out to the sun terrace in the morning and feast your eyes on one of Britain’s truly brilliant hotel views.

An unframed print or original from the art browser in reception, a great way to buy some proper art at an affordable price.
NOTA BENE
The poet Dylan Thomas (1930) described Mousehole as ‘the loveliest village in England’, a title that remains true to the present day.
