Nothing says autumn like the unmistakable waft of truffle. Fragrant, rich and pricey, it’s one of the most luxurious ingredients out there. The ancient Greeks called it the food of the Gods – a title upheld today by its legions of fans. With truffle season in full swing, we’ve rounded up the best places to eat it across the capital.
Bocca Di Lupo
A charming Italian trattoria in the heart of Soho, Bocca di Lupo has won numerous accolades since opening in 2008. Its ever-changing menu brings the best of Italy’s distinctive regional specialties to London, so of course they bring out the goods come truffle season. This year’s menu was inspired the Piemonte region, often referred to as ‘the white truffle capital of the world’ – with white varieties the focus throughout December. Alternatively, the restaurant offers guests the chance to BYO, which will be generously shaved tableside onto bowls of agnolotti dal plin stuffed with veal & pork or roast partridge with creamy polenta and bagna cauda. If all that leaves you wanting more, pop into sister site Gelupo afterwards. boccadilupo.com
Turnips
Former head chef at Jason Atherton’s City Social, Tomas Lidakevicius, is well accustomed to cooking with white truffle – but his new menu at Borough Market restaurant Turnips takes things a step further. Turnips has been sourcing the best quality Albas for many years, and this autumn guests are invited to choose which dishes they’d like to add the luxurious ingredient to from Tomas’ five-course tasting menu. To ensure low waste, the trimmings of the good stuff are used in the butters and foams that accompany many of the dishes too. turnipsboroughmarket.com
Spring
Skye Gyngell’s restaurant Spring, located in Somerset House, is a delight year round – but it’s even more special when taglioni with crème fraiche and truffle butter is on the menu, with truffles sourced from Italian supplier Meera Cortesi. springrestaurant.co.uk
Harry’s Bar
Italian hotspot Harry’s Bar on James Street serves up a dedicated white truffle menu this autumn, featuring four dishes specially created by chef Simon Gregory. Choose between a creamy burrata, a risotto, a taglioni egg pasta or a white-based pizza with wild mushrooms – all doused in a good helping of truffle. harrys-bar.co.uk
Murano
You can pretty much guarantee everything served under Angela Hartnett’s bracket will be amazing, even more so when there’s truffle involved. Murano’s autumn menu features a whole host of dishes infused with the ingredient, including soft polenta with roasted ceps, and Carnaroli risotto. muranolondon.com
Moncks of Dover Street
Mac & cheese is the ultimate comfort food – made all the more tasty when infused with truffle. Moncks of Dover Street’s version has fast become a menu favourite: rigatoni brimming with truffled cheese sauce, topped with cheese and freshly shaved Périgord truffle: heaven on a plate. moncksbrasserie.com
Gloria
Befitting of the larger than life Italian restaurant, Gloria’s truffle offering is wonderfully decadent. The Pasta al Tartufo is their house dish, featuring fresh malfadine pasta cooked with marscapone and flecked with black Molise truffle shavings and and button mushrooms. bigmammagroup.com
Gelupo
Deliveroo’s answer to truffle comes from Gelupo, Jacob Kennedy’s artisanal gelateria in Soho, which offers a dedicated delivery service straight to your door. They’ve also created a limited edition truffle gelato, made with white Albas and combined with ricotta – but you’ll have to leave the house for this one, as it’s available exclusively in store on Saturdays throughout the season. gelupo.com
