As summer wanes and the autumn chill creeps ever closer, it can only mean one thing: game season is here, and it’s time to celebrate.
Taste the first shoot of the season at these game-changing London restaurants.
45 Jermyn St, St James’
Few places ooze old-school British glamour like 45 Jermyn St. with its signature orange leather and eau de nil accents. Come game season, the restaurant steps it up a notch with a grouse and foie gras pie that hits a decadent spot you never knew you had. 45jermynst.com
Corrigan’s Mayfair
Richard Corrigan knows a thing or two about game, having grown up in Ireland catching and cooking it from a young age. His grouse pie is the stuff of legend, and his glazed duck with celeriac and endive a close second. corrigansmayfair.co.uk
Native, Covent Garden
Zero-waste, foraged-focused and dedicated to British wild produce, this season is the best time to visit Native. Game is shot in Yorkshire, and is thoughtfully cooked to showcase it at its best. eatnative.co.uk
The Cinnamon Club, Westminster
British produce and Indian flavours have always been a delicious combination. Vivek Singh’s modern Indian restaurant in Westminster Library serves a smashing tandoori-smoked breast of grouse with stir fried leg mince and spiced pumpkin chutney. cinnamonclub.com
Mac & Wild, Fitzrovia
London’s favourite Scottish restaurant specialises in wild meats, so it’s top of our list this time of year. They’ll be serving Wild Highland Grouse, and you get in the spirit of things at their new Virtual Shooting Range, found at the Devonshire Square branch. macandwild.com
The Game Bird, St James’
Game is the star of the show at The Stafford’s restaurant. Dishes go beyond the classics, with inventive, hearty creations such as roast grouse with game chips, bread sauce, liver on toast, pancetta and grouse sauce, and later in the season, game pithier with foie gras and game sauce. thestaffordlondon.com
The Jugged Hare
Renowned for its game dishes, gastropub The Jugged Hare is introducing a number of new dishes to the menu this grouse season, including a unique hare-infused gin. They’ll also be launching ‘Game Scholar Cards’, where diners are invited to tick off the variations of game they’ve tried to be in with the chance of winning a number of edible prizes. Jidori, Covent Garden
The yakitori restaurant is fusing traditional Glorious Twelfth delicacies with Tsukune (Japanese chicken meatball skewers) for an alternative take on the celebrations. Head Chef Brett Redman will be serving up the signature skewer with the more traditional minced venison and juniper tare – not forgetting the inviting egg yolk and coriander miso dip. jidori.co.uk
