The Best of London’s Outdoor Cinema for 2019

Make the most of sunnier evenings while they last by catching one of your favourite movies in the great outdoors. From cathedrals to castles, parks to palaces, screens are popping up all over the capital. Check out our guide to the best outdoor cinemas in London…

Rooftop Film Club

Rooftop Film Club now have three London venues across Bussey Building, Stratford’s Roof East and Queen of Hoxton in Shoreditch. With huge screens, comfortable deckchairs and incredible sound, outdoor film setups don’t get better than this. Iconic films on the cards this month include the old and new: from Casablanca (1942) to Pretty Woman (1990) all the way to Mary Poppins Returns (2018), every film celebrates love in one of its many, emotional forms. Screenings span the weekdays and weekend, so you can perk up a terrible Tuesday at work with a dreamy date night (double lounge seats are bookable) or relax into the weekend by watching a comforting classic and gorging on bottomless popcorn. You’ll also be given wireless headphones to make sure you’re not distracted by the outside world. Until late September.

Film 4 Summer Screen at Somerset House

For just two weeks in August, Somerset House‘s iconic Fountain Court will be transformed into a giant cinema. Putting on a variety of films under the night sky, the screenings will feature films like God’s Own Country, Straight Outta Compton and The Matrix, with each night including a live DJ set inspired by the film’s soundtrack. Beanbags are available to book for maximum comfort levels. 8-21 August.

Time Out’s Movies On The River

For a unique cinematic experience, set sail on London’s only floating cinema this summer. You’ll depart from Tower Pier and enjoy a sunset cruise through the heart of the city, before docking up in the middle of the water for a feel-good screening on the top deck, with films including Mamma Mia and Dirty Dancing. Until 3 August.

The Nomad

The Nomad is a charitable open-air cinema pop-up which donates all profits to The Sustainability Institute, an environmental charity based in South Africa. Films will be screened across various locations in London, including Hatton Garden, Hyde Park Lido, The Hoxton Shoreditch and Paddington Street Gardens, with film highlights including A Star Is Born, Some Like It Hot and The Favourite. 18 June-6 September.

Luna Cinema

Popping up in green spaces across the city from Alexandra Palace to Wimbledon Park, Luna Cinema are back with some great classics this summer, from Mean Girls to Forrest Gump. Depending on the venue, visitors can bring their own chairs and blankets, or take a seat on the ones provided; but not before grabbing a beverage from The Luna Bar. They also have a Luna Kids Cinema screening family-friendly classics during the day in venues like Dulwich Park and Hampton Court Palace. Summer season runs until the end of September.

Pop Up Screens

Inflatable screens will be popping up in venues across the city from July to September. Film screenings include feel-good rom coms like Notting Hill and 10 Things I Hate About You, alongside newer releases including Bohemian Rhapsody and Get Out. We recommend their premium seats which come with chairs for the ultimate in comfort. Otherwise, go full al fresco, pack your softest blanket and settle in with some popcorn. Until September.

Summer by the River

The sun is shining, and London Bridge is celebrating with Summer by the River: a three-month festival overlooking the Thames. Part of this will involve open-air cinema screenings of films such as Romeo and Juliet and Aquaman, which can be enjoyed alongside great street food and beautiful views of the city. Until end of August.

St Katherine Docks Floating Film Festival

St. Katherine Docks’ annual Floating Film Festival is back with a bang, taking place on the pretty marina with deckchairs, bean bags and plenty of snacks. This year you can see everything from Green Book to Mary Poppins Returns aboard the pontoon. 16-28 July. 

Beach Club Cinema

Watch movies with your toes in the sand at riverside hangout Fulham Beach, which now doubles as an outdoor cinema. Weekly film nights are taking place every Tuesday throughout the summer, complete with fizz, wood-fired pizzas, and free-flowing popcorn. Content-wise it’s all about the classics, with screenings of films like The Notebook, Dirty Dancing and Greece – with a couple of newbies thrown in too, including Lady Gaga’s acting debut A Star Is Born. Throughout the summer.

Stratford Summer Screen

Perfect for families, Stratford Summer Screen is showing everything from The Greatest Showman to The Lego Movie 2 over the summer. There’s even a day dedicated to Peppa Pig – including a special guest appearance from Peppa herself. If that’s not enough to get you down there, maybe the fact that it’s free of charge will. Until 8 September.

Roof Fest Sunset Cinema

A summer pop-up perched atop the Oxford Street branch of John Lewis, Roof Fest screens a range of feel-good movies and old school classics throughout the sunny season. Guests are invited to relax into deck chairs as they settle down to films like Cool Runnings (3 September), Ghostbusters (10 September) and Bridesmaids (24 September). Tickets cost just £13, and include a complimentary glass of beer, wine or a soft drink. Until end of September.
