With London Design Week and Craft Week on the horizon, now is the time to get creative. 5 Crafts Trends for 2020

Life Drawing

Adrian Monotype

In a world infiltrated by photoshop and unrealistic body expectations, life drawing has become somewhat of an antidote to the realm of the superficial. In fact, in 2018 The Telegraph quoted former president of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, Alastair Adams urging people to get involved with the art form, stating that it ‘has the benefit of allowing people to question what the ‘ideal’ body is’. Life drawing continues to thrive with classes emerging across the country, from the more traditional to the outlandish – even burlesque and cabaret life drawing is a thing.

Best place to learn: Artist and life drawing expert LilyHolder hosts monthly classes in collaboration with FreeForm Life Drawing at Chelsea’s No 11, Pimlico Road. Join her for music, drinks and plenty of sketching. darwinandwallace.co.uk

Flower Arranging

Bloomsbury Flowers Stephen Wicks and Mark Welford

It’s a craft that never appears to go out of fashion, with the ability to brighten any person or any room. It’s also big in the fashion world – look to Frida Khalo or Beyonce’s September 2018 Vogue cover for inspiration. Save your pennies splashing out on big-budget bouquets and create a bespoke floral arrangement of your own.

Best place to learn: Book a ‘Styling the Seasons’ workshop with Wild Bunch at their beautiful flower-enriched farm in Shropshire. For those within the city, ‘London’s premium florist’ Bloomsbury Flowers is your go to. Likewise, McQueens and Petersham Nurseries host fantastic floral workshops and events.

Stained Glass Crafts

Stained glass crafts have really taken off this year with Martha Stewart revealing ‘a 127 percent increase in searches for stained glass tools and supplies on Etsy’. Bright, colourful and often comprising some kind of narrative, artists have been creating decorative stained glass for centuries, so it’s not hard to find inspiration; just look to St Mary’s Church in Fairford’s 28 medieval stained-glass windows and David Hockney’s contemporary stained-glass curation at London’s Westminster Abbey.

Best place to learn: Stained glass specialist Cheryl Powling hosts a range of stained glass specific workshops at her home studio in North London. Practice lead work, foiling or create pretty mosaic pendants – there’s even a class for kids too. cherylpowlingglass.co.uk

Mindful Crafts

With the recent upswing of ‘self care’ and ‘switching off’, it’s no wonder that mindful crafting has gained so much traction for 2020. The ideal antidote to the bustle of every day life, crafting has the power to calm the mind and boost creativity all at once. Whether it be delighting in a colouring book (they’re not just for kids, you know), decorating a plant pot, or attending a macramé workshop, the mindful crafting trend is destined to help you ‘keep calm and carry on’.

Best place to learn: Mindful Crafts in Solihull, West Midlands hosts a range of workshops targeted to encouraging a sense of calm. From needle felting to Folk art, crochet and block printing, you’re bound to find a class to bring out the mindful creative in you. Need something a little closer to London? Look to The Lovely Craft Club for pyrography, mindful embroidery and more.

Patchwork & Quilting

Patchwork and quilting are back in fashion (though we’re not quite sure they ever really left). From quilting retreats to the 2020 Festival of Quilts, there’s plenty of patchwork to get involved with. Benefits include reduced stress and enhanced hand-eye coordination, plus you’ll create something that can be loved and passed down for generations.

Best place to learn: Ray Stitch in London hosts regular patchwork & quilt making classes, from beginners workshops to improvised patchwork with Forest + Found.
