As the Covid-19 crisis has many of us confined to our homes, there are silver linings to be found – one being all the extra reading time. And while the act of reading is a solitary pursuit, the discussion afterwards is equally enriching. Thankfully the world of online book clubs is bigger than ever, offering readers a chance to digitally share thoughts with like-minded literary lovers. Here are the ones to know.
Between Two Books
Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine launched her online book club back in 2012. Since then she’s been giving read recommendations every few months, followed by a big chat on Facebook, with opportunities for group members to email in topics they’d like to be discussed. To help during this period of lockdown, Between Two Books is recommending one book a day with different themes each week – this week it’s Rebirth – as well as hosting author Q&As.
Annoushka Book Club
Annoushka Ducas, the founder and designer of fine jewellery label Annoushka, has launched a virtual book club in collaboration with Penguin Books. This will feature three novels by female authors, selected by keen reader Ducas, with discussions taking place live on Annoushka’s Instagram page. First up is Girl, Woman, Other by Bernadine Ervaristo.
Poppy Loves Book Club
Book lovers from all over the world come together to join group discussions with Poppy Loves Book Club, started by London-based influencer Poppy Loves. Books are recommended each month, and discussions take place on Facebook on the last Wednesday of each month – often with the author joining in. April’s book is An American Marriage by Tayari Jones.
Reese’s Book Club
Join a casual 1.5 million-strong community of readers by getting involved with Reese Witherspoon’s online book club, with each recommendation featuring a woman as its lead. Bookworm (and of course world-famous actress) Reese picks a new book each month, encouraging open discussion in the comments – this month it’s Untamed by Glennon Doyle, a memoir packed with interesting thoughts on what it means to be a woman today.
Rebel Book Club

Founders Ben Keene and Ben Saul-Garner set up Rebel Book Club in 2015 after noticing a gap in the market for non-fiction focused book clubs. Five years on it’s grown to become a worldwide community, with a new book recommended each month based on current trends and member suggestions. This month it’s Midnight in Chernobyl by Adam Higginbotham.
Belletrist
Belletrist offers new book recommendations each month, chosen by none other than Emma Roberts and Karah Preiss. The library includes Lisa Taddeo’s Three Women, Molly Dektar’s The Ash Family, and this month’s choice: Writers & Lovers by Lily King.
Beth’s Book Club
This Instagram feed is one of the prettiest around – but it’s certainly not all style over substance. Run by Beth Sandland, Beth’s Book Club holds monthly meetings via Facebook to discuss the chosen book. It’s all online, so anyone can join from anywhere in the world – the only rule being: ‘you do actually have to read the book, this is not GCSE English’.
