Hotel of the Week: Congham Hall – King’s Lynn, Norfolk

Check out this week’s Hotel of the Week: Congham Hall – King’s Lynn, Norfolk

Set in 30 acres of gardens and woodland, this calm, handsome Georgian house has a special feature: its acclaimed herb gardens, containing almost 400 varieties, plus orchards and a kitchen garden. Owner Nicholas Dickinson has swept away the formerly dated furnishings and a lovely stone floor now graces the elegant hall, with its grey-green walls, antique furniture, sofas in front of the fire and vases of fresh garden flowers. To either side is a drawing room and library, and there’s also a slick bar. The airy dining room works both for smart gatherings and relaxed, informal meals.

The bedrooms are all impeccable and comfortable, divided between those in the house (the top floor rooms are small but charming) and others in the garden wing, next to the pampering Secret Garden Spa. The house rooms are cool and classical in style, making lovely havens in which to relax. What else? Why not treat yourself to a private falconry experience, including afternoon tea.

TIP

SEE

An early evening stroll through the Congham Hall herb garden is a real treat, with hundreds of different varieties of herbs, a working vegetable garden, an ancient orchard and some beautiful wild flowers, the sight and often smell is overwhelming. The hotel is also just a 20-minutes drive from the amazing North Norfolk beaches.

EAT

A delicious, yet thoughtful menu is on offer. Always seasonal, using some produce from the Congham Hall garden. But the Congham Hall mini pudding plate is a popular choice with guests, some share but some don’t!

BUY

Don’t leave without having received one of the signature spa treatments. The Herb Garden treatment is 75 minutes of pampering which has been designed especially for the spa with the garden in mind. Incorporating a deep cleansing facial, an intensive back massage and a relaxing scalp massage this will eases away any day-to-day stresses and re-centre the mind.

NOTA BENE

Built in 1780 by a wealthy merchant from King’s Lynn, Congham remained a family home until 1982, when it was turned into a hotel.
