Virtual Festivals To Tune Into

With all large-scale events banned until further notice, festival season is going to look a little different this year. We sadly won’t be enjoying the vibrant atmosphere of our favourite summer fiestas – but we can still have a taste of the action by tuning into one of the virtual festivals taking place. Read on for some of the best, spanning the worlds of music, food, literature and theatre.

Puffin Festival of Big Dreams

Jacqueline Wilson

As part of their 80th birthday celebrations, the world’s biggest children’s book publisher, Puffin, is launching a virtual festival in partnership with Waterstones. A stellar line-up of authors, illustrators and special guests will be running writing masterclasses and draw-along sessions, including Jacqueline Wilson, Robin Stevens, Carrie Hope Fletcher, Nadia Shireen and Sam Copeland. The festival will be hosted by Blue Peter presenter Radzi Chinyanganya, who will be taking audiences on a journey through Puffin’s 80-year history, revisiting an assortment of beloved stories and characters, past and present.

When: 8 – 14 June 2020

How: Events will be streamed on Puffin’s YouTube and Facebook Live channels.

Marylebone Summer Festival

Brands and restaurants across Marylebone will be coming together for a series of digital workshops, classes and tutorials this June. Running for a week-long period, the Marylebone Summer Festival will see each day based around a particular theme, including food & drink, wellness, home and garden, and music. Highlights include appearances from Marylebone food spots The Ginger Pig and La Fromagerie, a workout with Xtend Barre, a drawing competition hosted by The Howard de Walden Estate, and a fragrance session run by Anthropologie with Sarah Binns.

When: 8 – 14 June 2020

How: Visit marylebonevillage.com for the full schedule and follow @MaryleboneVillage for updates on retailer activities.

Glyndebourne Open Festival

The C&TH Guide to The Glyndebourne Festival 2019

In lieu of this summer’s six operas, Glyndebourne is going virtual, offering opera fans the chance to stream a free, full-length past production every Sunday evening. First up is Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, followed by Jonathan Kent’s Don Giovanni and Mozart’s Così fan tutte. Festival-goers are encouraged to recreate the Glynebourne experience in their homes by dressing up in their glad rags and tuning into the live picnic cookery demo, taking place on 23 May. Though performances are free to watch, donations are encouraged to help support artists and seasonal staff who have been left unable to work.

When: 24 May – 14 June

How: Performances will be streamed via YouTube and at glyndebourne.com

My VLF

My VLF

Free global virtual literary festival venue My VLF was launched in April 2019, well before coronavirus came into our lives. It was born out of a love of books, and the desire to connect readers and authors without the need to travel or spend money attending a literary event. Now, of course, it’s more relevant than ever. Events take place frequently throughout the year:  coming up in June is the Historical Book Festival, with a line-up including Kate Mosse, Ellen Alpsten and Victoria Hislop.

When: 6 June 2020

How: Sign up to My VLF for free, and you’ll have access to all events via myvlf.com

Getahead Virtual Festival

Getahead Virtual Festival

To tie in with Mental Health Awareness Week, Getahead is returning for its second virtual mental health and wellbeing festival this Friday. The day-long event will span their three pillars: health, development and fun. Start the day off on a positive note with an invigorating yoga session before getting stuck into a series of thought-provoking talks: topics of discussion include men’s mental health, kindness at work, and therapy for the NHS. The day will then be rounded off nicely with some comic relief from Dave Chawner and an uplifting DJ set from Charlie T from Kiss Fresh. Guests are asked to pay what they can, with all donations split between Refuge, NHS Charities Together and The Trussell Trust.

When: 22 May 2020

How: Visit dice.fm for tickets.

Big Weekend UK

Sam Smith, Disclosure and HAIM are just some of the acts set to perform at Radio 1’s Big Weekend, which has gone digital this year. Performances will take place across five virtual stages: The Radio 1 Stage, the Radio 1 Dance Stage, the 1Xtra Stage, the BBC Music Introducing Stage, and the Headliner Stage, which will feature legendary performances from previous Big Weekends including Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus. Tent and bucket hat optional.

When: 22 – 24 May 2020

How: Tune in by listening to Radio 1 and BBC Sounds, or watching via BBC iPlayer. bbc.co.uk/events

Bristol Takeover Online

Bristol Takeover Online

Khali Ackford

Due to coronavirus, hundreds of grassroots music venues are at risk of being closed down permanently – but a new national fundraising campaign titled Save Our Venues hopes to prevent this. As part of the initiative, BBC Introducing in the West is hosting Bristol Takeover Online, a digital festival featuring the likes of Adrian Utley of the band Portishead, The Allergies, Ishmael Ensemble and Rachael Dadd. Performances will be streamed via YouTube, but organisers are asking viewers to donate the money they’d normally spend on a gig ticket via the event’s CrowdFunder page – with all donations split between supporting participating artists and music venues in collaboration with Music Venue Trust.

When: 23 May, 3pm – 12am

How: Performances will be streamed on YouTube, visit colstonhall.org for details.

Urban Virtual Fete

Urban Village Fete was launched by Greenwich Peninsula to support and champion an array of local business – and though this year will be virtual, the premise remains the same. Curated by Hemingway Design, Urban Virtual Fete will offer a line-up of music, art, dance, craft, talks and workshops for all the family. Highlights include two set from DJ Gilles Peterson, an 80’s-inspired House of VOGA class, and a panel talk with BBC Radio London DJ Robert Elms and Wayne Hemingway MBE, who will be discussing topics such as the future for creative independents and what we want post-pandemic London to look like.

When: 31 May, 12 – 7pm

How: Visit greenwichpeninsula.co.uk for details.
