A Guide To PAD London

October is a big month for the London design scene. Curators, collectors and art enthusiasts aplenty descend on the city not only for Frieze, but for PAD London: the capital’s leading fair for 20th century art, design and decorative arts, returning this year for its 13th edition from 30 September-6 October.

The prestigious fair was founded in 1997 in Paris by Patrick Perrin, with the first London edition running ten years later in Hanover Square. Set in Mayfair’s Berkeley Square, PAD showcases mix of modern art, photography, glass and ceramics, fine art and jewellery, featuring galleries from 14 countries across Europe, North America and Asia. It’s designed to inspire collectors, art consultants, museum experts and interior designers – but if you don’t fall into any of these categories, it’s also just a lovely place to browse. Here we’ve highlighted some of the things to look out for this year…

Newcomers

The rich craftsmanship of South African design makes its mark at PAD London for the first time with the arrival of Southern Guild from Cape Town, Africa’s leading gallery for collectible design. This includes a new body of work by celebrated ceramicist Andile Dyalvane, created as part of his 2019 artist residency in St. Ives, as well as debuting new designs by Justine Mahoney, Stanislaw Trzebinski, Conrad Hicks, Porky Hefer and Zizipho Poswa.

Elsewhere, Taffin (New York) debuts a series of new creations composed of steel, oxidised silver, carved jade and vibrant ceramics, and Taiwanese-born high jewellery artist Anna Hu Haute Joaillerie (Paris, Hong Kong, Tapei, New York) joins the fair from Hong Kong, showcasing imaginative creations with shimmering colours and previous details. And arriving from Barcelona is the Side Gallery, which will be uncovers a refined selection of 20th century Latin American furniture, celebrating Brazilian design heroes Joaquim Tenreiro and Sergio Rodrigues.

Highlights

Carpenters Workshop Gallery (London, Paris, New York, San Francisco) premieres a new chandelier by Spanish designer Nacho Carbonell, set in dialogue with a selection of debut pieces including Rick Owen’s striking Double Bubble sofa.
Mouvements Modernes (Paris) curates a playful booth incorporating collectible crafts, with new sculptural designs by Danish ceramicist Turi Heisselberg Pedersen, who examines the inherent character and textural freshness of clay. This collection also showcases works form Paris-based design duo Garouste and Bonetti, known for their quirky furniture.

Pablo Picasso’s 1956 work Head of the Sun is on display at Helene Bailly.
Karen Swami (Paris) showcases impressive mastery of the Japanese art of Kintsugi, the technique of mending fissures and cracks in pottery with pure gold.
For jewellery, UK-based Elisabetta Cipriani will unveil Sahasrara Pendant by Lebanese jewellery designer Noor Fares, inspired by the mystical qualities of gems.
Paris’ Galerie Bsl will present new tables from Chinese-French duo Studio MVW’s Jinye series, made of Patagonian quartzite, as well as lighting by Pia Maria Raeder from her Sea Anemonesseries made from bronze and natural beach rods.
