Welcome to Black Friday 2020. While this big shopping event used to be a weekend-only thing, it’s likely to stretch across the month of November – and we’re already spotting odd deals appearing on sites such as Amazon and Argos.

John Lewis says that its commitment to being ‘never knowingly undersold’ means that it matches its competitors’ prices all year round, so ‘even when it’s not Black Friday, we’ll have deals you can enjoy’.

Check in store as well as online

For obvious reasons, 2020 has been THE year of online shopping. That said, some retailers are still tempting in-store customers with deals, and Black Friday shoppers may still find that a mix of online and store shopping will reap the best deals. Shoppers seem to prefer hunting out deals online on the day itself, but visit shops over the weekend when retailers continue to discount.

You may also spot some good ex-display offers from the likes of DFS, Next and so on, as Black Friday offers a first good opportunity to start making way for 2021 stock.

How can I avoid being ripped off on Black Friday?

‘It’s easy to get carried away, so make a list of what you want in advance,’ advises Danny Munday, general manager of HotUKDeals. It also pays to read reviews and compare prices of the models you like, so you know you’re getting a genuine deal. ‘Check the shipping costs before you order, too,’ adds Danny. ‘Some brands charge so much for delivery, it cancels out any savings.’

Will my Black Friday purchases arrive by Christmas?

We are going to be honest here – if you are thinking of investing of a new sofa for Christmas and are looking for a deal on Black Friday, pay close attention to delivery dates. A lead time on a made-to-order sofa is a minimum of six-to-eight weeks, which equates to delivery in January or even February.

If you are keen for an item to be delivered sooner rather than later, you’ll have better luck with items that are off-the-shelf or ‘in the warehouse’. However, even then, you may be looking at a longer-than-usual delivery time given the increased pressure on courier services at this time of year.

It might even be best to go for in-store pick up, if that’s an option and you have a vehicle that can transport larger items.

How should I pay for my Black Friday purchases?

We always recommend buying larger items on a credit card, for a couple of reasons. The biggest is that anything you buy with a credit card that costs between £100 and £30,000 is protected under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act. This makes your card provider as liable as the retailer if something should go wrong with your purchase. 

For example – you buy a sofa. When it arrives, it’s faulty. Or perhaps it never arrives because the retailer goes bust (a sad but distinct possibility in these uncertain times). Either way, you’ll be able to claim a refund through your credit card company. This also applies if you pay a proportion on your credit card (say, a deposit) but the rest in cash or on a debit card.
