A Guide To Frieze London and Frieze Masters 2020

Like most cultural events in 2020, Frieze London and Frieze Masters will involve a hybrid of online and offline activity this year. Returning to the capital this October, the festival will see over 200 of the world’s leading galleries participate online in the second edition of Frieze Viewing Room. But it’s not all about the web: a programme of live events will be taking place across the city too. Read on for the highlights – and stay tuned for updates, as the full programme is being announced shortly.

Frieze Viewing Room

Following the platform’s successful launch in May, Frieze Viewing Room returns with a whole host of exciting new functions, including a live chat to connect collectors and galleries and architect-designed 2D virtual gallery spaces. Galleries will be able to present up to 36 artworks within their digital space, alongside video and text features. 9 – 16 October, registration opens soon

Focus

Focus, the fair’s section for galleries aged 12 years or younger, provides a platform for emerging artists. This year there are presentations from Daiga Grantina and Nicholas Cheveldave (Emalin), Ana Roldán, Abel Rodríguez & Wilson Rodríguez and Marlon de Azambuj (Instituto de Visión), among others.

Possessions

The theme of spirituality is being explored in Possessions, Frieze London’s new curated section. Led by Zoé Whitley, director of Chisenhale Gallery, it will include solo presentations from Iván Argote (Vermelho), Mike Cloud (Thomas Erben Gallery), Dewey Crumpler (Jenkins Johnson Gallery) and Vera Frenkel (Georg Kargl Fine Arts).

Frieze Sculpture

Celebrated public art initiative Frieze Sculpture returns to London’s Regent’s Park with 12 monumental works by leading international artists. Curated by Clare Lilley, director of programmes at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, this year’s collection includes works from Lubaina Himid, Richard Long and Rebecca Warren. Spotlight

Curated by Laura Hoptman, executive director at The Drawing Centre in New York, Spotlight brings together solo presentations from pioneering artists of the 20th century. Highlights include graphic works from Swiss artist Dieter Roth, paintings by Sergio Lombardo, images from avant-garde photographer Kati Horna, and works from Renate Bertlmann, who represented Austria at the Venice Biennale at 2019.

Frieze Talks

Tune into panel discussions with Frieze Talks, which is being overseen by Dr. Nicholas Cullinan, director of the National Portrait Gallery for the first time. The line-up includes a conversation with the luminary artist, writer and director John Akomfrah, with a full programme being announced soon.

The Frieze BBC Radio 3 Debate, 8 October

This year’s Radio 3 Debate will focus on museums in the 21st century, moderated by Anne McElvoy, journalist and presenter of BBC Radio 3’s Free Thinking. Listen in at 10pm on 8 October – or catch up afterwards via the BBC Arts & Ideas podcast.

Gallery Highlights

• Stephen Friedman Gallery will present a new selection of works by British sculptor Holly Hendry, shown both in their Viewing Room and in a specially designed space on Burlington Street.
• Check out new work from multidisciplinary artist Theaster Gates at White Cube online, or visit the public installation at their Bermondsey gallery from 11 – 16 October.
• A new piece from Turner Prize winner Helen Cammock is on display online at Kate MacGarry, coinciding with a solo show at the gallery during Frieze Week.
• A collection of 20th-century American prints from Ellsworth Kelly, Helen Frankenthaler, Donald Judd, Jasper Johns and Ed Ruscha are on show at Tristan Hoare’s Fitzroy Square gallery, in dialogue with objects London gallerist John Kasmin.

Other world-leading international galleries participating include Hauser & Wirth, Gagosian, Marian Goodman Gallery and Pace Gallery. There will also be a strong representation of London galleries, such as Sadie Coles HQ, Pilar Corrias Gallery and Thomas Dane.
