Where Can You Go On Holiday Right Now?

As the Coronavirus situation continues to change, where can we actually go on holiday right now? At present there are only four countries with permitted quarantine-free travel from the UK. But with different parts of the UK in various tiers of lockdown, what does this mean for UK travel? Are staycations allowed? Here’s what you need to know about taking a last-minute holiday this season…

Where Can You Go On Holiday Right Now?

With Turkey, Poland and Italy all being added onto the quarantine list for UK travel this month, there are only four options left on the air corridor right now. You can fly to Germany, Gibraltar, Greece or Sweden and return without needing to quarantine, but these are all subject to change depending on Covid-19 cases. Greece excludes the island of Mykonos, so any arrivals from the popular Greek island will need to complete a 14-day self-isolation period on return. However, Greece remains on Scotland’s quarantine list.

In addition, if you are visiting Germany from Northern Island, Scotland, North East, North West Midlands, Yorkshire or Wales, you’ll need to self-isolate on arrival. So if you’re planning a visit to any of the countries currently on the UK’s air corridor quarantine exclusion list, it’s worth checking the latest arrival restrictions from visitors before booking.

Many destinations, including the Maldives, Barbados, Italy and Cyprus all now require a negative coronavirus test to secure entry from the UK.

Can We Still Go On Holiday In The UK?

So, what does all of this mean for staycations? The government’s current three-tier system of local Covid alert levels in England means that different areas have different restrictions. Outside of England, at present, Wales is banning visitors from high-risk areas (anyone in tier 2 or 3), Scotland is advising against all travel in or out of high-risk zones and Northern Ireland is currently advising that no unnecessary travel should be undertaken, with most hotels currently closed.

Can You Go On Holiday In Tier 2 Lockdown?

At present, yes. With all of London and large parts of the midlands and the north in tier 2, guidelines encourage that people aim to reduce the number of journeys made where possible, but you can still travel to permitted destinations. However, you can only go on holiday with people in your household or support bubble.

In short, the rules of your local lockdown tier apply even when you’re on holiday, so you couldn’t travel to visit family outside of your tier and revert to tier 1 guidelines, but you could travel with other members of your household to a hotel or holiday rental for a seasonal getaway.

Of course, all of this is subject to change. Many hotels are currently offering flexible booking policies in case your trip is affected by a change in rules or the need to self-isolate. Check before you travel and always check local travel restrictions before booking and before departure.
