Storage solutions don’t need to cost a fortune, if you are looking for a unique way to keep your kids toys in order but are a little short on funds have a go at this tote bag storage idea. Use any old canvas bags that you might have hanging around the house and cover them with a splash of fabric paint or screen print some letter to personalise them. Next attach some hooks into the underside of the windowsill and simply hang the filled bags from them.

2. Update old furniture with a little paint

Your child’s tastes are going to constantly change as they grow up, but that doesn’t mean you need to trade in there old desk overtime there colour preference changes. If you have a few paint brushes lying around the house get hold of some sample pots of paint and add a splash of colour to an old desk. Achieve this ombre style effect by swirling a little white paint into the colour you’ve chosen to create a colour gradient.

3. Use everyday objects to make something special

Create unique light fittings and storage solutions with objects you have lying around the house or even in the garden. In this room a large branch has been used to create an interesting light fixture by draping it with a hanging light. If you have an old wooden ladder lying around, why not repurpose it as a trendy ladder hanging rail? It will be perfect for storing your children’s spare blanket and a place for there toys to hangout.

4. Frame your children’s artwork

Prints are a great way to brighten up a white bedroom, but they can often be quite pricey, so why not use your kid’s artwork to brighten up their room. Frame their favourite drawings and hang them up to create a cost effective gallery wall. Not only will it add an affordable splash of colour to the room, but your child will be so proud to see their work hung up like in a proper gallery.

5. Give new life to preloved furniture pieces

Don’t throw away a versatile furniture piece, give it a makeover and with that, a new purpose. Give an old or boring chest of drawers a new look for a child’s room, by upcycling it using paint and washi tape.

Children’s rooms can be instantly brought to life with layers of bright colour and pattern. An upcycled storage unit adds great decorative value.

6. Give walls an inexpensive art-effect

Wall murals are a great option to add personality to kid’s rooms but, unless you have artistic flare paying someone to paint one can be expensive. For a more budget-friendly alternative you could try a simple paint effect, that adds interest to walls without costing too much. To create this geometric wall statement select two complimentary colours, use a spirit level and masking tape to divide the wall in half then get painting.

7. Make it multi-functional

budget children's room

As your children grow, their room will need to accommodate a desk for study, and plenty of additional storage space for books and equipment. Shop for multi-functional pieces of furniture that incorporate desk space with plenty of hidden, but accessible, storage. Avoid ‘theming’ a room too much, instead opting to bring to life your child’s favourite designs and colours through bedlinen and soft accessories. Remember that simple storage items such as boxes, baskets, hooks, hangers and wall organizers will all help to create an efficient space that still has plenty of personality.

8. Recycle used materials

Don’t let unloved materials go to waste. Upcycling is all about breathing new life into old items – be it furniture, home accessories or, even clothing. And a child’s bedroom is the perfect place to experiment with weird and wacky designs. This children’s bedrooms is incredibly creative, and also features plenty of upcycled pieces.  The walls was made using reclaimed corrugated iron to make an urban-inspired feature wall. It only cost £10!

9. Accessorise well

If a child’s room is looking a little on the bland side, consider investing, and when we say investing we actually mean heading down to your local charity shop, or bargain supermarket, to pick up a few standout accessories. Stylish accessories don’t have to cost the Earth. The high street have become incredibly good at replicating higher-end brands at affordable prices, see the likes of Aldi or Lidl for example. Alternatively, you might find a hidden gem at a local charity shop. After all, one persons trash, is another persons treasure.

10. Get crafting

budget children's room

Stringing up pretty bunting – a brilliant thing to make on a shoestring budget – makes for a pretty decorative touch. Bunting is the perfect way to add a fun touch to your child’s room. It’s pretty, playful, and can be made with different fabrics and patterns to suit any occasion. And what’s more, you can get your child involved in the crafting process.

11. Tape it up

Budget children's room ideas

This is a particularly handy tip if you’re renting or you’re not up for letting your kids cover their walls with bright paint or wacky wallpaper – let your kids loose with washi tape instead. It is also a great alternative to expensive frames! Available in a range of colours, patterns and sizes, washi tape allows you to stick up whatever you fancy on the walls and it peels back off without leaving a trace – plus its far prettier to look at and better for your walls than blu-tack. Papermash is an excellent stockist for the stuff.

12. Get creative with wall stickers

If you and your child aren’t naturally artistic and find washi tape a little tricky, try using wall stickers to jazz up a wall inexpensively. This blush and gold rain cloud wall sticker helps transform this room into a pretty bedroom retreat, perfect for a 13 year old. The best part about wall stickers is that they are easy to remove, so if your son or daughter grows out of the design they are easy and inexpensive to change over.

Cheers to new cocktail flavoured Poundland candles – ideal for gifts

Last year Prosecco themed gifts were everywhere. Ahead of the curve is a new Poundland cocktail candle collection that caters for some alternatives on the menu.

From ‘Bellini Surprise’ to ‘Prosecco Fizz’ there’s a tipple themed candle to suit all tastes. Priced at only £1 each it’s the one occasion we’d happily encourage you to mix, try a different scent in every room of your home.

Speaking of scents: The best ways to fragrance your home

These new candles are in stores now, available while stocks last.

New Poundland candles

Cocktail Candles

The new candles range comprises three scents, all boasting a 32 hour burn time – all for just £1 each. The new scented candles are available in stores now across the UK.

Prosecco Fizz candle

Cocktail Candles

Prosecco has been the leading champion of the drink themed gifts for the last few years now. The popularity of this cheap alternative to champagne even lead to a near shortage. Remember? When we all thought the bubbles would come to an end?  Well thankfully that didn’t happen.

In fact it made us toast more to this delightful thirst quencher. Not just the literal bubbles, we sought out Prosecco gifts in all varieties – because we all know someone who loves a glass of bubbles. This new £1 candle is a great gift for fizz fans.

Bellini Surprise candle

Cocktail Candles

Following on from the Prosecco theme, only with a splash of peach there’s a new Bellini flavour. Just like the drink itself this peachy number is said to be ‘sweet & fruity’.

Not only does the candle smell offer a divinely sweet scent it looks attractive in a bright pink and yellow colour combination.

Rhubarb and ginger candle

Cocktail Candles

Non-alcoholic cocktail themed, this blend of ingredients makes for a ‘sweet & fiery’ scent to invigorate the senses.

The Weekender: 48 Hours in Gardone Riviera

As tourist resorts go, Gardone Riviera must be one the most dignified, characterful and unexpectedly cultured in Italy. It’s not only the epitome of Lake Garda-lounging, it’s also a famous Italian poet’s playground, drawing thousands from all over Europe every year.

Here, you get the pick of a great bunch of gelaterias and pizzerias, while luxuriating in the calm, laid-back tranquility that emanates from the shores of the majestic, freshwater Lake Garda and the proud majesty of the Cyprus trees towering over amid lush green countryside. The evening buzz is not much louder than a cicada’s love song, yet the food you’ll find there punches well above its weight and will remain up there with your best Italian foodie experiences for years to come.

It’s not overrun by screaming children nor pushy salespeople, but neither is it too snoozy: Those that do populate the streets are perfectly content with their lot. Famed for being the home of Il Vittoriale degli Italiani, the Italian writer Gabriele d’Annunzio’s hillside estate, this tops the list of reasons to visit. Yet that would be missing the point. The Gardone Riviera is not a hit-and-run kind of place. There are innumerable reasons for not only one visit but ten. Meander lakeside or up the hill through the village and there is not a single, modern or unsightly building to complain of, just street upon hidden alley of beautiful terracotta rooves and mustard yellow or salmon pink-washed buildings complete with faded murals. Whether by boat, bike or on foot, Gardone Riviera is the best base for exploring Garda in all its glory.

Where to Stay in Gardone Riviera

Villa Eden

For top-of-the-range villas, Villa Eden is dream-worthy. Made up of nine individual villas, designed by international architects including David Chipperfield, Richard Meier and Matteo Thun, this park-like property set high on the wooded cliffs of the south-western coast of Lake Garda is a work of modern art as much as it is an ideal holiday destination.

Riviera Gardone

Each villa is architecturally unique and enjoys magnificent panoramic views of Lake Garda and the surrounding countryside

Alternatively, book one of The Clubhouse’s nine rooms, which each feature a private balcony and a full glass front from which you can admire glimpses of Garda in peace. Combining the amenity and at-hand service of a hotel stay with the freedom of having your own place to spread out is Villa Eden’s speciality. Whether you choose the main hotel or a villa for your stay, you’ll be granted the hard-to-achieve balance of attentive care and autonomy on every front.

The main hotel, The Clubhouse, at Villa Eden

Where to Eat in Gardone Riviera

Casinò

If you want to up the romance and edge a little closer to Garda and the hub of activity that hugs the lake from dawn to dusk, book a table at Ristorante Casinò. It’s indulgent, it’s authentic and it’s also – unapologetically so – a little soppy (not literally, don’t worry, you eat at a terrace a few metre above the water line). The atmosphere here is second to none.

Villa Eden

Dining at Villa Eden is an experience not to be missed. Characteristically generous, dinner takes this value almost too far, with a whole loaf of bread and homemade crostini to nibble(!) on, followed by four appetisers before you even hit your first ordered course. From octopus to tuna carpaccio, risotto to gnocchi, the ingredients may be classic but the results are far more impressive.

Sans Souci

For a simpler affair entirely and the chance of (a shot of home-brewed limoncello on the house) grab a cheap and cheerful pizza at Sans Souci. With tables occupying a side street just metres from the lake, you’ll get cosy to your neighbours and might even gain a few friends as well as a full stomach.

If you still have room for a gelato after that (we dare you), La Casa del Dolce beats Gelateria Pinguino Giallo.

Sleepy Italian village meets European cultural heavyweight

What to See in Gardone Riviera

Il Vittoriale degli Italiani

A panoramica view of parts of Il Vittoriale degli Italiani

Don’t underestimate little old Gardone Riviera. There is far more to it than meets the eye, particularly since Gabriele d’Annunzio, a famous Italian poet, journalist and playwright, chose it to be his home and, later, resting place. Referred to as a ‘monumental citadel’ or otherwise a ‘fascist lunapark’, the grand estate, Vittoriale degli italiani, may be politically dubious but it’s undeniably a mind-blowing feat of imagination that only a writer of d’Annunzio’s esteem could conjure into reality. With a naval warship jutting from the cliff, manmade and natural waterways of epic proportions, a grand mausoleum and an ampitheatre overlooking the lake, it’s a rabbits warren of surprises. Each sight has a suitably literary name, such as the ‘Pond of Dances’, and the effect is all a bit much in 30 degree heat. You do get some of the best views of the lake from within the estate, so it’s totally worth the disorientating walk for the vista at the top.

Nave Puglia overseeing Lake Garda

Remember to check out The Priory as well as the park, where you can go inside D’Annuzio’s home and probe ever deeper into his creative mind at your peril: note that there are two waiting rooms, one for welcome guests and one for unwelcome ones. You can spend a whole day here no sweat.

Where the work was done

What to Buy in Gardone Riviera

Spirito de Garda

Though some scholarly sticklers believe that Sicily was the first Italian region to grow lemons, citrus fruits were brought from the Liguria Riviera to Lake Garda during the 13th century by monks where they grew in world-famous lemon-houses, with high walls to maximise on the microclimate there. All that history lesson serves to tell us is that limoncello should be on your shopping list. Try walking along the promenade west of Gardone Riviera to Salo and visit Spirito del Garda to get yourself a bottle. The family make the liquors themselves!

Gardone Riviera

Citrus fruits have grown here since the 13th century

What to Do in Gardone Riviera

With its own speedboat, Villa Eden can take you out on the lake where you can see the bigger picture and appreciate the beauty of Gardone Riviera and the other nearby villages of Lombardy from afar. With the wind in your hair you’ll be able to truly appreciate the terracotta roofs against the brilliant blue sky and forest green Cyprus trees.

Gardone Riviera

Explore Garda at speed

If you don’t have the sea legs for it, hit the decks bathing-suit clad instead and strike out in the cool (ok, extremely cool) waters of Garda. There are a number of private beaches (part of hotel complexes or otherwise) where you can pay a small fee for a beach spot or lounger. For free, head to Spiaggia Casinò (just to the left of the restaurant) and rock up on the pebbled strand for a paddle.

How to Get There

The closest airport is Verona (less than an hour and a half from Gardone Riviera) which means that a trip here could – and should – incorporate a stopover in the setting of Romeo and Juliet. EasyJet and British Airways both fly from London Gatwick once a day. In less than three hours you won’t believe the paradise you’ve arrived in.

Tiny characterful home

Always wanted to live in a chocolate factory? Now's your chance...

Usually, we’d ask: ‘hands up who’s always wanted to live in a chocolate factory?’ But to save time we think it would be faster just to ask who doesn’t want to live in one!

Anyone who has ever watched Charlie and the Chocolate Factory will have fantasied at some point or another about living in a chocolate factory – or is that just us? Well, if you live in Hayes, West London, that dream could be about to become true.

The former Nestle Milkybar factory is being transformed into a 1,386 home neighbourhood, complete with a gym and community space in the original canteen building.

Chocolate factory 3

Nestle took over the factory in 1929, and it became the first factory outside Switzerland to manufacture Nestle’s Milkybar. That means all those creamy bars of white chocolate you chomped on while pretending to be the Milkybar Kid were probably made in this very factory.

During the factory’s heyday in the Fifties, over 2,000 people (not Oompa Loompas) worked at the factory. The factory later switched to producing freeze-dried instant coffee, but closed in 2015.

The housing development was given the green light by Hillingdon Council back in 2017, and there are plans to start construction imminently. Developer Barrett intends to restore the 1960s Art Deco-style entrance and preserve the memorial to local factory workers who fought in both World Wars.

There are plans to create more than seven acres of green public space within the sprawling 30-acre complex. The towpath running along the Grand Union Canal will also be upgraded and opened up to members of the public for the first time.

This might not be the gingerbread house with ice-sugar shifters snowing down on you in Willy Wonka’s factory, but what’s to stop you turning your own kitchen in a Wonka approved testing room?

Prices for flats are expected to start at £325,000. For that price, you will not only get lovely canal view and flats dripping in industrial charm but the nostalgic chocolatey address of Nestle Avenue.

Unfortunately, the pound signs that flash before your eyes when you hear the phrase ‘country home’ can sometimes put a pin in these dreams. Luckily not every rural retreat will require you to shell out a fortune for a kitchen with a view and a peaceful bedroom.

MoveIQ has done the hard work for you and taken a deep dive into some of the countries most picturesque postcodes to reveal the 10 cheapest rural places to live in the UK.

Children's room storage ideas – to create a neat, tidy and organised space

Looking for ways to organise your child’s room? We’ve selected our favourite children’s room storage ideas to inspire your next decorating scheme.

Planning a successful child’s bedroom scheme depends on plenty of forward-thinking. Good storage, multi-functional furniture that serves a child’s changing needs, and imaginative décor are all key. A balance between form and function will result in a hard-working layout that stands the test of time.

As your children grow, their bedroom will need to accommodate a desk for study, and plenty of additional storage space for books and equipment.

As we encourage little ones to express themselves through art and crafts, we need to provide the perfect place for all the mess that goes with it. By creating a dedicated workstation it allows them to get creative but remain tidy at the same time. This smart storage solution is merely a painted panel with floating shelves mounted against it to create a small but adequate desk area.

Additional magnetic strips have been added to ensure all manner of metal objects can be safely stored off the floor.

Just because storage is functional doesn’t mean it has to be boring – especially in a child’s room. We’ve updated this pine IKEA storage unit with a few tester pots of paint. Simply use masking tape to section off the various areas you wish to paint and let your creativity run wild. It might even encourage a little one want to tidy up themselves, you never know.

3. Explore the possibilities with multi-use hangers

Sometime the simplest of solutions is the best. In this child’s bedroom we used Komplemet multi-use hangers from IKEA to storage storage soft toys. Instead of the use intended, storage for scarves and ties, we’ve utilised the hanger for kids toys. Not only does it make perfect sense to provide extra storage space in an accessible cupboard, it’s also a great way to keep plush toys off the floor – ideal for hygiene purposes too.

4. Use portable baskets for storing toys

They are perfect if your child’s play area sprawls into your living room and you need to be able to move them around to clean.

You can never have too much storage, and nowhere is this more true than in a kids’ bedroom or playroom. Team less-frequently accessed solutions, such as an under-bed basket, with easy-to-reach containers, baskets and peg rails so that everything can be cleared off the floor quickly and easily.

8. Make use of wall storage

In a compact space, make the most of walls for storage. Wall-hung shelves or units will not take up floor space, leaving it available for playing. Open shelves will keep everything within easy reach and will make tidying a quick and easy task. Combine storage with display by using crates as wall-hung, box-style shelves. Each of these boxes has been painted to match a chest of drawers, creating an eye-catching practical feature space against a white backdrop. The boxes have been lined with a decorative paper and then filled with favourite toys and accessories, proudly visible but nice and neat. The tops of the crates create additional display shelves too. If you prefer a more streamlined look, incorporate wall cabinets so you can store toys and other bedroom paraphernalia behind closed doors. Look for shelves that feature hooks or peg rails for a little additional hanging space.

9. Look for low-level storage

Make it easy for your child to play with and pack away their toys. Storage doesn’t have to be boring and bland. Get creative by painting each door in a different colour to stimulate the senses and provide an attractive display that you can change as often as you wish.

10. Include under-bed storage

Ideally, look for beds with built-in storage. Divan beds will provide convenient drawers at a height perfect for little arms, and many feature sliding panels for easy accessibility that allow you to have a bedside table next to the bed. This also keeps you from having to drag out unwieldy storage systems. However, if the specific look of a divan bed does not fit into your chosen design, go for a bedstead that is high enough to stash small storage boxes underneath. Wicker baskets peeping through can keep a bedroom feeling rustic and homely. However, an overhanging piece of fabric in a soft, base complimentary colour as above can hide any cheap, basic but functional boxes you might buy.

11. Add in moveable storage for versatility

Look for storage solutions that can be adapted as your child’s needs change. Adjustable shelving allows for different uses, from big blocks to DVDs to ring binders. Tidying their own room will be impossible if they can’t reach. Use higher storage for things like bedding that only you need access to.

12. Think multi-purpose solutions

If you want more storage, but don’t have the wall space, look no further than under the bed. A bed with built-in storage drawers is a sensible choice – also opt for a bench with lift-up seats, or a play table with storage hidden underneath the tabletop.
